Sloan Research Fellowship in Physics, an honor that recognizes outstanding early-career scientists who specialize in one of seven scientific and technical fields: chemistry, computer science, Earth system science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience and physics. <abbr>IfA<\/abbr> alumnus <strong>Brendan Bowler\u2019s<\/strong> research focuses on extrasolar planets\u2014planets around stars besides our Sun\u2014and spans a variety of topics related to their formation, evolution, structure and atmospheres.<\/p>\n<p>During his time at <abbr>IfA<\/abbr>, Bowler\u2019s research relied on Maunakea telescopes, and included obtaining the <a href=\"https:\/\/keckobservatory.org\/spectrum_of_young_extrasolar_planet_yields_surprising_results1\/\">very first near-infrared spectrum<\/a> of an extrasolar planet and conducting the first large imaging survey for exoplanets around low-mass stars using the largest ground-based telescopes. His <abbr title=\"doctor of philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> work earned Bowler a <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Regents\u2019 Medal for Excellence in Research and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/kaunana\/ifa-alumnus-brendan-bowler-wins-trumpler-award\/\">Trumpler Prize<\/a>, awarded annually to one astronomy thesis in all of North America. Bowler graduated from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> in 2013.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Related <em><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News<\/em> story: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/12\/18\/kepler-super-earth-discovery-confirmed-by-uh-astronomer\/\">Kepler super-Earth discovery confirmed by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> astronomer<\/a>, December 18, 2014<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;I\u2019m very grateful for the experiences and support I had at the <abbr>IfA<\/abbr>,&rdquo; said Bowler, who is now an assistant professor of astronomy at the University of Texas at Austin. &ldquo;It\u2019s rare for graduate students to lead big surveys with the largest ground-based telescopes. I don\u2019t know of another institution where I could have done the same dissertation.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship is bestowed upon early-career researchers in recognition of distinguished performance and a unique potential to make substantial contributions to their field. The fellowship is among the most prestigious awards available to young faculty, with only a few given each year to astronomers. Bowler will receive $75,000 to be spent over two years on his research.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>IfA<\/abbr> is a great place for students to learn to become world-class observational astronomers, and I\u2019m delighted but not surprised that Brendan has been awarded this fellowship. He was a joy to work with during his time at UH, given his enthusiasm, dedication and talent,&rdquo; said <abbr>IfA<\/abbr> Professor <strong>Michael Liu<\/strong>, who advised Bowler.<\/p>\n<h2>Past <abbr>IfA<\/abbr> recipients<\/h2>\n<p>Bowler joins <strong>Douglas Clowe<\/strong> (<abbr>PhD<\/abbr> 1998) and <strong>Emily Levesque<\/strong> (<abbr>PhD<\/abbr> 2010) as <abbr>IfA<\/abbr> graduates who have won the Sloan Fellowship. <abbr>IfA<\/abbr> faculty, <strong>Christoph Baranec<\/strong>, <strong>Daniel Huber<\/strong> and Liu were awarded the fellowship while at the
