Nominated by faculty in the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/call\/\">College of Arts, Languages &#38; Letters<\/a>, <strong>Azlynn Brandenburg<\/strong> and <strong>MacAlasdair Uchimura<\/strong> are among 17 students from eight states to serve on the inaugural <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalhumanitiescenter.org\/national-humanities-leadership-council\/\">National Humanities Leadership Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted by the National Humanities Center, members will participate in various interactive experiences in the 2021&#8211;22 academic year that explore the importance of humanistic perspectives to address the concerns of contemporary society. Activities may also include a focus on specific projects and engagement at their home institutions.<\/p>\n<p>According to the center, by bringing together a diverse group of students with shared passions and professional goals, &ldquo;the council aims to facilitate creative and ambitious inter-institutional collaborations that help students prepare for a wide range of careers.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Brandenburg, a senior triple majoring in <a href=\"https:\/\/english.hawaii.edu\/\">English<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaii.edu\/phil\/\">philosophy<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/wgss.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">women, gender and sexuality studies<\/a>, hopes to attend graduate school and looks forward to the experience to grow as a researcher and academic.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In participating in this council, we have all been encouraged to think about any research or community outreach projects that we would like to explore and seek collaboration on,&rdquo; Brandenburg said. &ldquo;As of right now, I am leaning towards a digital humanities project that would center around education reform and combating the spread of misinformation.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Uchimura, a junior <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/llea\/classics\/\">Classics<\/a> major, hopes to engage with experts in the humanities field and mentors who will assist in the transition from undergraduate to graduate level courses.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I engage with literature (specifically classical literature) in ways that aren&#8217;t the average double-spaced paper, and I&#8217;m hoping that I can work with the resources from the council as well as my peers in order to figure out how I can make a significant contribution to the field of Classics through my work,&rdquo; Uchimura said.<\/p>\n<p>This program is an example of <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s goals of <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-2025-strategic-plan.pdf#page=20\">Enhancing Student Success<\/a> (<span class=\"small-text\"><abbr title=\"Portable Document Format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/span>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-2025-strategic-plan.pdf#page=25\">Excellence in Research: Advancing the Research and Creative Work Enterprise<\/a> (<span class=\"small-text\"><abbr>PDF<\/abbr><\/span>), two of four goals identified in the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-2025-strategic-plan.pdf\">2015&#8211;25 Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/a> (<span class=\"small-text\"><abbr>PDF<\/abbr><\/span>), updated in December 2020.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Azlynn Brandenburg and MacAlasdair Uchimura are among 17 students from eight states to serve on the inaugural National Humanities Leadership Council.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":16,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[29],"tags":[1471,342,1466,1363,764,660,9,1626,552],"class_list":["post-154620","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-people","tag-college-of-arts-languages-and-letters","tag-english","tag-manoa-enhancing-student-success","tag-manoa-research","tag-philosophy","tag-student-recognition","tag-uh-manoa","tag-women-of-uh","tag-womens-studies","entry","has-media"],"aioseo_notices":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/154620","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/16"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=154620"}],"version-history":[{"count":7,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/154620\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":154644,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/154620\/revisions\/154644"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=154620"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=154620"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=154620"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
