View the press conference above.<\/p>\n<p>The position was open following the resignation of Head Coach <strong>Todd Graham<\/strong> on January 14.<\/p>\n<p>Athletic Director <strong>David Matlin<\/strong> and Jones met in person on January 21, to discuss the offer and negotiate a deal. What he was able to accomplish and the joy he brought to Rainbow fans and the people of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> will be forever cherished.<\/p>\n\n \n\n\n\n<p>However, when hiring someone, work history matters, especially if they had previously worked for you. When Jones left for greener pasture, which no one can fault him on, he fought his buyout with <abbr>UH<\/abbr> for nearly a year while <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and the state pulled out all the stops to keep him in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>. He blamed it on <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and broken promises, saying leaving was the only way to send a message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Then in 2012, there was the <abbr>ASU<\/abbr> head coach offer that <abbr>ASU<\/abbr> withdrew for what was reported to be character concerns. The coach left <abbr>SMU<\/abbr> in 2014 after an 0 and 2 start. Work history matters. Leadership would be foolish not to take all of that into consideration. It says something about integrity and character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of standing on his resume, he put as much pressure on <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and Athletics Director David Matlin as possible. This public campaign has turned ugly including a petition to fire Matlin and the social media sharing of Matlin and President Lassner\u2019s phone numbers with a callout to flood their offices with calls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Matlin did not go to the media with his concerns or plans beforehand to undermine Jones. Over his 7 year tenure over <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Athletics, Matlin has shown nothing but integrity. Although he is not perfect, with the Graham hiring being an obvious example, he is overseeing arguably the most challenging Division 1 program in the country. And that was before losing Aloha Stadium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>He has hired 13 coaches, including Nick Rolovich, and has the full support of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> leadership because he has always, first and foremost, put the interest of the university ahead of anything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Matlin went in with a plan for the future looking for a partner.
