  {"id":15446,"date":"2013-04-02T12:57:41","date_gmt":"2013-04-02T22:57:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=15446"},"modified":"2020-11-12T14:45:04","modified_gmt":"2020-11-13T00:45:04","slug":"hawaii-cc-and-hilo-educators-honored-by-native-hawaiian-association","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/04\/02\/hawaii-cc-and-hilo-educators-honored-by-native-hawaiian-association\/","title":{"rendered":"<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> and Hilo educators honored by Native Hawaiian association"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_15475\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15475\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/NHE-Aawardees.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"327\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/NHE-Aawardees.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/NHE-Aawardees-260x236.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15475\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Clockwise from left, Gail Makuakane-Lundin, Taupouri Tangaro and Kekuhi Kanae Kanahele <span arila-label=\"KealiikanakaoleoHaililani\">Keali&#699;ikanaka&#699;oleoHaililani<\/span> named 2013 Educators of the Year by the Native Hawaiian Education Association.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Two <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College<\/a> professors and a longtime <a href=\"http:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a> employee have been named 2013 Educators of the Year by the Native Hawaiian Education Association, one of the most prestigious awards in Hawaiian education.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taup&#333;uri Tangar&#333;<\/strong>, an associate professor and the chairman of the humanities department at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>; <strong>Kekuhi Kanae Kanahele <span arila-label=\"KealiikanakaoleoHaililani\">Keali&#699;ikanaka&#699;oleoHaililani<\/span><\/strong>, assistant professor and coordinator at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>&#8217;s I Ola Haloa <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Life Styles Program; and <strong>Gail Makuak&#257;ne-Lundin<\/strong>, executive assistant to the chancellor at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo, was honored at the Native Hawaiian Education Association&#8217;s 14th Annual Convention, March 21&#8211;22.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Chancellor <strong>Noreen Yamane<\/strong> said the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> system is fortunate to have such dedicated educators working at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo. &ldquo;Tangar&#333;, Gail and Kekuhi have a deep understanding of Hawaiian culture and history, which is incredibly valuable for our students and our college community overall,&rdquo; said Yamane.<\/p>\n<h2>More on the honorees<\/h2>\n<p>Kumu Hula Tangar&#333; received his training from H&#257;lau O Kekuhi, a traditional hula school known for the <span aria-label=\"aihaa\">&#699;aiha&#699;a<\/span> style of hula&#8212;a low-postured, vigorous, bombastic style reflecting the creative forces of the volcano. He received his bachelor of arts from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo, his master of education from Heritage College and his PhD from Union Institute and University.<\/p>\n<p>Makuak&#257;ne-Lundin has been with <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo for 29 years and is considered a leader in Native Hawaiian student services on campus and within the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System. She led the systemwide initiative that added Hawaiian ancestry to the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> common application in 2005. She holds a master of science degree in public health from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa, a bachelor of arts degree in biology from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo and is a doctoral candidate at the University of Southern California Rossier School of Education.<\/p>\n<p>Kumu Hula <span arila-label=\"KealiikanakaoleoHaililani\">Keali&#699;ikanaka&#699;oleoHaililani<\/span>, under the direction of her mentors, has co-produced some of H&#257;lau o Kekuhi&#8217;s most significant contributions to oral and ritual arts performances. She holds a bachelor of arts in Hawaiian studies from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo and a master of education from Heritage University.
