It is one of eight grants totalling $3.9 million for rural economic development projects and is part of <abbr>NIFA<\/abbr>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nifa.usda.gov\/program\/agriculture-and-food-research-initiative-afri\">Agriculture and Food Research Initiative<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_154127\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-154127\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/maui-agriculture-aquaponics-fish.jpg\" alt=\"Student with net and tanks\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-full wp-image-154127\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/maui-agriculture-aquaponics-fish.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/maui-agriculture-aquaponics-fish-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-154127\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Remy Romo-Valdez works as a garden technician in the aquaponics greenhouse<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;This project will address key community training needs relevant for local agriculture,&rdquo; said Chancellor <strong>Lui Hokoana<\/strong>, one of the principal investigators. &ldquo;The potential impacts of the project include advancing knowledge in the application of precision agriculture technologies in aquaponics production systems and developing sustainable food systems in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> for food security and community resiliency.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Adapting Precision Farming Technologies for Sustainable Aquaponics Systems in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> project will be conducted at the campus\u2019 WaiPono Farm aquaponics and hydroponics greenhouse.
