Each year, U.S. Congress appropriates roughly $3.2 million under the Native Hawaiian Career and Technical Education Program (<abbr>NHCTEP<\/abbr>) to community-based organizations primarily serving and representing Native Hawaiians to plan, conduct and administer career and technical education (<abbr>CTE<\/abbr>) programs for Native Hawaiian students.<\/p>\n<p>In <abbr>FY<\/abbr>2021, the U.S. Department of Education <a href=\"https:\/\/cte.ed.gov\/grants\/native-hawaiian-career-and-technical-education-program#collapseOne\">awarded nine grants<\/a> to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> recipients under the <abbr>NHCTEP<\/abbr> program, including six grants to ALU LIKE Inc. (of which four <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Community Colleges are subrecipients).<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We\u2019re looking at students that need extra help and working in different areas at different <abbr>CC<\/abbr>s, mainly it\u2019s to get the students into the community colleges and this program,&rdquo; said <strong>Al Moreno<\/strong>, director of ALU LIKE\u2019s Ka Ipu <span aria-label=\"Kaeo\">K&#257;&#699;eo<\/span> department. &ldquo;Outcomes would be to get a credential, degree, industry certificates, anything to help them out. It\u2019s a lot of work by the <abbr>CC<\/abbr>s and for us to make sure that we are on target for the grants.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Funding amounts represent the first year of proposed five years of funding for the projects.<\/p>\n<h2>ALU LIKE\/<abbr>UH<\/abbr> recipients <abbr>FY<\/abbr>2021<\/h2>\n<h3>ALU LIKE, Inc.; <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College ($160,000)<\/h3>\n<p>The <span aria-label=\"Kaikai\">Ka&#699;ika&#699;i<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Ao\">A&#699;o<\/span> Internship and Workforce Service Program will provide students with targeted support, internships and relevant hands-on projects that are specific to the following programs at <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> that represent high-skill, high-wage, in-demand occupations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Automotive technology<\/li>\n<li>Carpentry technology<\/li>\n<li>Electrical installation and maintenance technology<\/li>\n<li>Electronics technology<\/li>\n<li>Facilities engineering technology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The project will further develop <abbr>CTE<\/abbr> student supports, which reflect an improved and ongoing dedication to workforce investment. Through this alignment of educational and business opportunities, the project will work to build stronger communities and live up to the <span aria-label=\"Kaikai\">Ka&#699;ika&#699;i<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Ao\">A&#699;o<\/span> name to raise its students up through teaching, advising and learning together. The project will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increase enrollment, retention and completion of students in <abbr>CTE<\/abbr> and <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> courses.<\/li>\n<li>Integrate Hawaiian culture and trade-specific instruction to increase relevant knowledge and skills through participatory experiences.<\/li>\n<li>Improve employability through completion of industry recognized certifications, licenses and\/or degrees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>ALU LIKE, Inc.; <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College ($250,000)<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/kapiolani-nhctep-grants-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-153012\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/kapiolani-nhctep-grants-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/kapiolani-nhctep-grants-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/kapiolani-nhctep-grants.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The K\u016blia ma <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> project will support Native Hawaiian students to be competitive in high-skill, high-wage and in-demand occupations through rigorous <abbr>CTE<\/abbr> and <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> programs, while maintaining their identity as a native person.<\/p>\n<p>The project will provide introductory college success classes and bootcamps to support college readiness and retention. The project will provide career planning tools, information sessions and orientations to help participants find purpose, pursue their passion and attain professional success. The project will support 75 students to successfully complete <abbr>CTE<\/abbr> and <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> programs, and receive training toward industry certifications, certificates or degrees. It will also support them in gaining employment within three to six months after graduation.<\/p>\n<h3>ALU LIKE, Inc.; Leeward Community College ($262,500)<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/leeward-nhctep-grants-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people working in field\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-153014\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/leeward-nhctep-grants-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/leeward-nhctep-grants-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/leeward-nhctep-grants.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The K\u016blia Mau project will improve Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>\u2019s <abbr>CTE<\/abbr> programs by piloting three activities that will design, implement, expand, evaluate and improve the career pathways program. The project activities will promote personalized career planning, skill building and personal\/financial supports to increase Native Hawaiians\u2019 readiness to enter <abbr>STEM<\/abbr>, computer science and in-demand and high-wage careers, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cybersecurity<\/li>\n<li>Digital media<\/li>\n<li>Information and computer sciences<\/li>\n<li>Natural sciences<\/li>\n<li>Plant biology and tropical agriculture<\/li>\n<li>Pre-engineering<\/li>\n<li>Business<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The project will deliver industry-linked professional development activities to program instructors and staff supporting <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> courses aligned to in-demand <abbr>CTE<\/abbr> careers, to weave industry needs and employability skills into lessons and advising sessions that increase readiness for in-demand and living-wage careers, and help participants earn academic and industry credentials while providing opportunities to develop valuable employability skills.<\/p>\n<h3>ALU LIKE, Inc.; Windward Community College ($290,000)<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/winddward-computer-science-cybersecurity-233x300.jpg\" alt=\"woman looking at a computer\" width=\"233\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-151275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/winddward-computer-science-cybersecurity-233x300.jpg 233w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/winddward-computer-science-cybersecurity-101x130.jpg 101w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/winddward-computer-science-cybersecurity.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 233px) 100vw, 233px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <span aria-label=\"Ao\">A&#699;o<\/span> Kahi Project will expand opportunities for Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> students to obtain recognized <abbr>CTE<\/abbr> and <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> postsecondary credentials and hands-on learning for employment in high-skill, in-demand and high-wage careers, specifically in computer science and sustainable agriculture. The project will ensure students have equitable access to high-quality <abbr>CTE<\/abbr> programming to improve educational and workforce outcomes; and increase student program support to more than 20 existing <abbr>CTE<\/abbr> and <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> courses, in addition to the current four cybersecurity courses.
