Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) to support student learning.<\/p>\n<p>The donation, in celebration of <abbr>UHA<\/abbr>\u2019s 25th anniversary, establishes the <abbr>UHA<\/abbr> Health Insurance and the <a href=\"https:\/\/giving.uhfoundation.org\/funds\/20975603\">Dr. Max G. Botticelli Medical Innovation Endowment<\/a>, which will support <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>\u2019s efforts to develop and implement innovative curriculum initiatives, including learning communities and problem-based learning.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As the only medical school in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>, the critical role of <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> in the health of this community cannot be overstated,&rdquo; said Howard Lee, <abbr>UHA<\/abbr> president and chief executive officer. &ldquo;We could think of no more fitting way to celebrate our 25th anniversary than to support and encourage the development of our future physicians with this $1 million donation to honor Dr. Botticelli\u2019s legacy.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<h2>Student learning center dedication<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_153063\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-153063\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/manoa-jabsom-uha-botticelli-dedication-300x169.jpeg\" alt=\"check presentation with 5 people\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-153063\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/manoa-jabsom-uha-botticelli-dedication-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/manoa-jabsom-uha-botticelli-dedication-130x73.jpeg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/manoa-jabsom-uha-botticelli-dedication.jpeg 675w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-153063\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ann Botticelli, Jerris Hedges, Tim Dolan, Jill Omori and Howard Lee<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In recognition of the $1 million gift, the 3,300 square-foot third-floor student learning center in <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>\u2019s Medical Education Building was dedicated to the memory of the late Botticelli during a blessing event on December 10. He was a legendary member of the <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> faculty, practicing physician and co-founder of <abbr>UHA<\/abbr> Health Insurance. Formerly known as the Problem-Based Learning Center, it will now be called the &ldquo;<abbr>UHA<\/abbr> and Dr. Max Botticelli Student Learning Center.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Botticelli was a strong advocate of problem-based learning in which small groups of students discuss clinical cases as part of an educational process, while a faculty member serves as a facilitator. It requires that students take an active role in their learning and fosters critical problem-solving and team-building skills.<\/p>\n<h2>Connected history<\/h2>\n<p><abbr>UHA<\/abbr> and <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> have intertwined histories that pre-date <abbr>UHA<\/abbr>\u2019s existence: In 1996, Botticelli, then chair of the <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> faculty-practice insurance plan, joined other physician-educators and founded <abbr>UHA<\/abbr> as a different kind of health insurance company&#8212;one with physician leadership and a goal of improving members\u2019 health through a focus on preventive medicine and overall well-being.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, Botticelli\u2019s family has long supported <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> through the Dr. Max G. Botticelli Memorial Endowment for Innovative Medical Education. The fund was established in 2012 to honor the values that he held as a practicing physician and educator. <\/p>\n<p>The $1 million gift is the most recent from <abbr>UHA<\/abbr> to <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>. In August 2020, the two organizations announced the donation of $100,000 to underwrite the launch of the innovative patient-centered learning communities curriculum designed to help <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> graduates develop trusting doctor-patient relationships that have been shown to improve health outcomes.
