The <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/cs\/programs\/multilingual-multicultural-professional-practice\/\">multilingual multicultural professional practice<\/a> (<abbr>MMPP<\/abbr>), a 15-credit interdisciplinary program, is the first cross-college certificate programs in the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> System by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Education<\/a> (<abbr>COE<\/abbr>) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/call\/\">College of Arts, Languages &amp; Letters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We use the term &lsquo;multilingual&rsquo; to be consistent with current perspectives in the field of second language studies,&rdquo; said Second Language Studies Professor <strong>Graham Crookes<\/strong>, one of the designers of the program. &ldquo;Instead of using terms such as &lsquo;English Language Learner,&rsquo; multilingual emphasizes the cultural and linguistic assets of people and recognizes the need for fostering heritage language maintenance and language acquisition broadly, not just English. Richardson School of Law, to promote social justice, equity and sustainability. Part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/mlmc\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Multilingual Multicultural Strategic Initiative<\/a>, the certificate cultivates a strong sense of place, building upon <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> unique cultures and languages, while also preparing graduate students to be leaders in multilingualism, multiculturalism and linguistic human rights.<\/p>\n<h2>Connecting courses to professional field<\/h2>\n<p>Structured so students across diverse disciplines will share two core multilingual multicultural courses, the remaining three courses of the <abbr>MMPP<\/abbr> program will be elective multilingual multicultural courses connected to their professional field in the context of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. Hawaiian culture, history and language are foundational across the curriculum. Students will collaborate on an integrative final project drawing on their newfound multilingual multicultural understanding of their professional field.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It will be exciting to see students network across different disciplines, professions and orientations, to identity problems and create solutions and programs to better serve our multilingual multicultural communities,&rdquo; said Professor <strong>Patricia Halagao<\/strong>, one of the program designers and chair of the <abbr>COE<\/abbr> <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/cs\/\">Department of Curriculum Studies<\/a>, which is administering the certificate. <\/p>\n<h2>Working with multilingual multicultural populations<\/h2>\n<p>The <abbr>MMPP<\/abbr> certificate offers important knowledge and skills that professionals, including lawyers and educators, need to work effectively with multilingual multicultural populations.<\/p>\n<p>For educators, <abbr>MMPP<\/abbr> coursework addresses essential local policies and national professional standards to ensure they have the needed knowledge, skills, and values to support their multilingual multicultural learners in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brook Chapman de Sousa<\/strong>, <abbr>COE<\/abbr> Institute for Teacher Education associate professor and collaborating designer, said, &ldquo;We\u2019ve designed a specific set of coursework aligned to the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Education <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiipublicschools.org\/DOE%20Forms\/NaHopenaAoE3.pdf\">N&#257; Hopena <span aria-label=\"Ao\">A&#699;o<\/span><\/a> place-based policy and the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesol.org\/docs\/default-source\/books\/2018-tesol-teacher-prep-standards-final.pdf?sfvrsn=23f3ffdc_6\"><abbr>TESOL<\/abbr><\/a>) standards.
