(Photo credit: Danielle Kaiolani Loo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Opportunities and solutions for the nation\u2019s most critical water issues are proposed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.er.usgs.gov\/publication\/cir1488\">published report<\/a> co-authored by two <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant College Program<\/a> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">(Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant) experts.<\/p>\n<p>The report, &ldquo;Water Resources Research Act Program&#8212;Current Status, Development Opportunities, and Priorities for 2020&#8211;30,&rdquo; is the first vision document for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/water-resources\/water-resources-research-act-program\">Water Resources Research Act (<abbr>WRRA<\/abbr>) Program<\/a> in its 50-year history. It focuses on seven critical challenges: water scarcity and availability; water-related hazards and climate variability; water quality; water policy, planning and socioeconomics; ecosystem and drainage basin functions; water technology and innovation; and workforce development and water literacy.<\/p>\n<p>The vision document was initiated in 2018 at the request of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/\">United States Geological Survey<\/a> (<abbr>USGS<\/abbr>) to guide its <abbr>WRRA<\/abbr> Program and its 54 university-based state institutes and centers for the next 10 years.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_152456\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-152456\" style=\"width: 236px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/manoa-sea-grant-water-resources-236x300.jpg\" alt=\"plants and mountains\" width=\"236\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-152456\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/manoa-sea-grant-water-resources-236x300.jpg 236w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/manoa-sea-grant-water-resources-102x130.jpg 102w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/manoa-sea-grant-water-resources.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 236px) 100vw, 236px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-152456\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span aria-label=\"Loi\">Lo&#699;i<\/span> kalo at Waip&#257;. Donohue<\/strong>, engaged the <abbr>USGS<\/abbr> <abbr>WRRA<\/abbr> Program federal coordinator, Earl Greene, all 54 state institutes, and an ad hoc vision committee to articulate the current and future trajectory of the program to maximize its service to our nation.<\/p>\n<p>Lerner, director of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant, university consortium director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/pi-casc.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">Pacific Islands Climate Adaptation Science Center<\/a>, and past interim director of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrrc.hawaii.edu\/\">Water Resources Research Center<\/a>, noted &ldquo;It is truly a privilege to have had the opportunity to work with all of the <abbr>WRRA<\/abbr> program directors and many of their staff to develop this critical synthesis and pathway forward for the amazing work of these university-based programs in service to communities across the entire U.S.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Donohue, who serves as <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant\u2019s program development and national partnership specialist, said &ldquo;Each of us has, or will soon, be touched by water issues resulting from climate change and other pressures. We urgently need the innovative research conducted by the <abbr>WRRA<\/abbr> Program and the next generation of water professionals it trains to see us through the coming years.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>USGS<\/abbr> <abbr>WRRA<\/abbr> Program delivers university-based research, outreach and education services to citizens in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the territories of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
