A local, community-based solution, co-developed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a> and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> County was showcased as a model approach to climate change adaptation challenges.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=c8mmPE7UTpA\">An inspiring video<\/a> presented the <a href=\"https:\/\/pi-casc.soest.hawaii.edu\/research\/research-projects\/hawaii-shoreline-inventory\/\">details of a project<\/a> co-developed by <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo geography professor <strong>Ryan Perroy<\/strong> and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> County Planner Bethany Morrison. (Photo credit: King Tides Project)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With support from the <a href=\"https:\/\/pi-casc.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">Pacific Islands Climate Adaptation Science Center<\/a> (<abbr>PI<\/abbr>&#8211;<abbr>CASC<\/abbr>) hosted at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa, the study builds upon a <a href=\"https:\/\/pi-casc.soest.hawaii.edu\/research\/research-projects\/coastal_erosion_rates\/\">previous <abbr>PI<\/abbr>&#8211;<abbr>CASC<\/abbr> project<\/a> by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo <a href=\"https:\/\/pi-casc.soest.hawaii.edu\/about\/mcc\/\">Manager Climate Corps<\/a> master\u2019s student, <strong>Rose Hart<\/strong>, who collaborated with Perroy and Morrison to estimate coastal erosion rates for three stretches of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island coastline and compared them to projected sea-level rise rates. The ultimate goal of this collaboration is to establish the entire island\u2019s coastal vulnerability to rising sea levels, providing agencies and decision makers with tools to assist in building community resilience to rapidly changing climate conditions.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;These data and products will be a lasting resource for land managers, local government and the scientific community as we grapple with the challenges of building community resilience in a time of rising sea level,&rdquo; said Perroy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mari-Vaughn Johnson<\/strong>, <abbr>PI<\/abbr>&#8211;<abbr>CASC<\/abbr>\u2019s federal director, said, &ldquo;I love the way it showcases how community-based solutions to climate change can work.
