The <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> assistant professor of sociology knows of what she speaks&#8212;having struggled with food and finances for much of her life, until well after landing her <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> faculty position in the fall of 2017.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There is nothing we can do well if we are hungry, and everyone needs access to food that is nourishing. The reason I am where I\u2019m at in life is because of the help from so many\u2014friends, family, and community,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p>It is why Mota-Back assists her students and the broader community with basic needs, and has volunteered for multiple food distributions in the Kapolei area over the past few years.<\/p>\n<h2>Fear and anxiety<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_151252\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-151252\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/west-oahu-mota-back-family-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"parents and kids\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-151252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/west-oahu-mota-back-family-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/west-oahu-mota-back-family-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/west-oahu-mota-back-family.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-151252\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">X\u00f3chitl Mota-Back and family in 2017.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Her most challenging time was as a visiting assistant professor at Willamette University in Oregon, the year before she moved to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. At the time, Mota-Back was the sole provider for a family of four, including her partner, a toddler and a newborn.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It\u2019s one thing when you\u2019ve grown accustomed to pacing how much you eat, where and when you shop, and price-comparing as a college student living on your own, but once you have babies it\u2019s a whole new world of fear and anxiety,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Trips to the local food bank were a great help, but were restricted by the food bank to once a month.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We were a family with one <abbr title=\"doctor of philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> and one on the way and couldn\u2019t afford to pay for childcare. Going to the food bank helped us use the little income we did have to buy diapers and wipes and pay the electric bill,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Even after moving here for her new job at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, things didn\u2019t get better right away. The move was expensive and the nine-month contract meant a three-month gap in pay. Mota-Back said she should have been going to the foodbank when she first got here, but didn\u2019t due to lack of information about available resources or where to go.<\/p>\n<p>She said the students at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> are very similar to her.
