It also includes updates to each of the k&#363;lana (posture and carriage) to reflect lessons learned in previous\/ongoing partnerships.<\/p>\n<p><em>K&#363;lana <span aria-label=\"Noii\">Noi&#699;i<\/span><\/em> was initially developed in 2017 through a partnership between university researchers and place-based stewards to ensure equitable and reciprocal relationships with those connected to, and caring for, the <span aria-label=\"ahupuaa\">ahupua&#699;a<\/span> of <span aria-label=\"Heeia.\">He&#699;eia.<\/span> It outlined a set of ideas, values and behaviors that served as a resource to facilitate open conversation and clearly articulated expectations.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/manoa-seagrant-KulanaNoii-2-0-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"cover of book\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-151152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/manoa-seagrant-KulanaNoii-2-0-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/manoa-seagrant-KulanaNoii-2-0-104x130.jpg 104w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/manoa-seagrant-KulanaNoii-2-0.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Since <em>K&#363;lana <span aria-label=\"Noii\">Noi&#699;i<\/span><\/em> was first released, more than 600 researchers, community members and resource stewards have been trained through more than 40 workshops on building and nurturing pilina (relationships) and <span aria-label=\"Ao\">A&#699;o<\/span> aku, <span aria-label=\"ao\">a&#699;o<\/span> mai \/ Aloha aku, aloha mai (knowledge given, knowledge received \/ love given, love received).<\/p>\n<p>It has also had far-reaching impacts beyond <span aria-label=\"Hawaii,\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½,<\/span> and has been shared nationally through peer-reviewed journal articles, the <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.noaa.gov\/\"><abbr title=\"National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\">NOAA<\/abbr> Sea Grant<\/a> traditional and local knowledge <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.umaine.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/467\/2019\/06\/MSG-E-18-18_Traditional-and-Local-Knowledge.pdf\">vision document<\/a>, the Climate Adaptation Knowledge Exchange <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cakex.org\/case-studies\/coastal-adaptation-case-story-kulana-noii\">website<\/a>, as a resource in creating the Arctic Science Summit Week 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/assw2021.pt\/?accao=codeofconduct\">Code of Conduct<\/a> and more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rosie Alegado<\/strong>, director of the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Sea Grant College Program\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/integrated-knowledge-systems\/\">Center for Integrated Knowledge Systems<\/a>, said &ldquo;This guidance document also has resonance for other academic institutions that strive to center justice and equity in their work.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Next, the K&#363;lana <span aria-label=\"Noii\">Noi&#699;i<\/span> Working Group intends to focus on developing additional curricula to train <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr> faculty and graduate students in this process. &ldquo;A key starting point for University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> becoming a Native Hawaiian place of learning is for our researchers to adopt a praxis of working in partnership and active engagement with local communities,&rdquo;
