But after an acute attack of right lower abdominal pain, <strong>Vera Ong<\/strong>, a 2024 <abbr title=\"doctor of medicine\">MD<\/abbr> candidate, found herself hooked up to an <abbr title=\"intravenous\">IV<\/abbr> pole and confined to a hospital bed while worrying about doing well on her final exams less than a week away. Ong, an out-of-state student with her family miles away in California, found comfort in forming a bond with her hospital roommate, &ldquo;Mrs. T,&rdquo; who could not have any visitors due to COVID-19 restrictions. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_150776\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-150776\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/manoa-jabsom-ong-vera.jpg\" alt=\"Vera Ong \" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-150776\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/manoa-jabsom-ong-vera.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/manoa-jabsom-ong-vera-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/manoa-jabsom-ong-vera-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-150776\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vera Ong<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This sour-turned-sweet experience inspired Ong to create <em>Mauli<\/em>, the first art and literary journal at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>), which launched its <a href=\"https:\/\/osa.jabsom.hawaii.edu\/mauli\/\">inaugural issue<\/a> in July 2021. The name, <em>Mauli<\/em>, is a Hawaiian word that embodies ideas of growth, connection to humanity and a bridge between the fields of science and humanities. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I acknowledged the fear and beauty of life\u2019s unpredictability and how we ultimately have the power to tell our own stories through art and writing,&rdquo; Ong said. &ldquo;I felt called to help spark a humanities journal to facilitate a platform for self-expression.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>A student-led journal<\/h2>\n<p>Ong pitched her idea to her classmates and <strong>Shannon Hirose-Wong<\/strong>, <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>\u2019s director of student well-being and mental health support, who became the journal\u2019s faculty advisor. In December 2020, they began collecting written and visual arts pieces from medical students, faculty, staff, alumni and other <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> affiliates. <\/p>\n<p>The publication was a student-led effort by <abbr>MD<\/abbr> 2024 candidates: <strong>Kelli Kokame<\/strong> and <strong>Kyung Moo Kim<\/strong> helped in brainstorming the structure of <em>Mauli<\/em> while <strong>Brianna-Marie Hollister<\/strong> and <strong>Melia Takakusagi<\/strong> served as writing editors. <strong>Rae Ruixue Zhang<\/strong> and <strong>Richard Ho<\/strong> served as the visual arts and layout editors, respectively. <strong>Amity Tran<\/strong> served as the journal\u2019s graphic designer. <\/p>\n<p>Ong added, &ldquo;We also couldn\u2019t have done this without the input and help of Dr. <strong>Malia Purdy<\/strong> (who bestowed the group with the journal\u2019s name, <em>Mauli<\/em>), Dr. <strong>Lee Buenconsejo-Lum<\/strong>, Mr. <strong>Arnold Kameda<\/strong>, Ms. <strong>Sandy Liu<\/strong> and the <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> communications team.
