The team took home $5,000 in cash and services for the win. Another <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa team won third place, winning $1,200 in cash and services.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/impact.meteor.com\/hackathon\">Meteor Hackathon<\/a> October 15&#8211;20 challenged teams to build an impactful application for a cause, a business model, a non-profit or other field. The hackathon was hosted by Meteor Software, a startup that created Meteor, a free and open-source JavaScript web framework.<\/p>\n<h2><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa teams<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Anna Campainha<\/strong>, <strong>Daphne Estacio<\/strong>, <strong>Jerome Gallego<\/strong>, <strong>Michael Gainey<\/strong> and <strong>Timothy Huo<\/strong> won first place for &ldquo;EcoCamino,&rdquo; an application designed to support the organization of sustainability-related events such as cleanups and workshops that increase environmental awareness among the public.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Behind every great app is a lot of hard work and communication to meet deadlines and create something special,&rdquo; said Campainha, an <abbr>ICS<\/abbr> senior. &ldquo;The hackathon taught me areas that I thrive in versus the areas I need to improve. These are not situations you encounter daily until you\u2019re competing to develop a project and have a team relying on you to do your part.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Estacio, also an <abbr>ICS<\/abbr> senior, added, &ldquo;For me, the best thing about joining a hackathon was the self exploration I experienced. Not only did it test the knowledge and the skills that I already have, but it also showed me that I am capable of so much more than I thought.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_150728\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-150728\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/manoa-ics-cokoa-hackathon-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"screenshot with words and photos\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-150728\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/manoa-ics-cokoa-hackathon-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/manoa-ics-cokoa-hackathon-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/manoa-ics-cokoa-hackathon.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-150728\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&ldquo;CoKoa&rdquo; landing page<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Yong Kim<\/strong>, <strong>Yeji Han<\/strong>, <strong>Kai Hwang<\/strong> and <strong>Cheolhoon Choi<\/strong> won third place for &ldquo;CoKoa,&rdquo; an application to support organization of safe face-to-face meetings during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>All of the students participated in the hackathon as part of an <abbr>ICS<\/abbr> special topics course taught by Professor <strong>Philip Johnson<\/strong>. &ldquo;Hackathons provide a fast-paced development experience in which team communication, creativity, adaptability and hard work are keys to success. These same qualities are highly valued in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8216;s high tech industry.
