{"id":150496,"date":"2021-10-26T10:11:01","date_gmt":"2021-10-26T20:11:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=150496"},"modified":"2024-03-15T22:32:06","modified_gmt":"2024-03-16T08:32:06","slug":"all-female-team-leads-math-journal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/10\/26\/all-female-team-leads-math-journal\/","title":{"rendered":"1st all-female team to lead math journal includes <abbr>UH<\/abbr> professor"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/manoa-math-manes-la-matematica.jpg\" alt=\"headshot over a photo of a path and trees\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-150497\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/manoa-math-manes-la-matematica.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/manoa-math-manes-la-matematica-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/manoa-math-manes-la-matematica-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> professor is one of four women to be named editors-in-chief of a new mathematics journal&#8212;a first for any journal in the mathematical sciences. <a href=\"https:\/\/math.hawaii.edu\/wordpress\/\">Department of Mathematics<\/a> Professor <strong>Michelle Manes<\/strong> co-heads <a href=\"https:\/\/www.springer.com\/journal\/44007\"><em>La Matematica<\/em><\/a>, the new flagship journal of the <a href=\"https:\/\/awm-math.org\/\">Association for Women in Mathematics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I was both honored and surprised to be asked to join <em>La Matematica<\/em> as one of the editors-in-chief,&rdquo; Manes said. &ldquo;Like many senior women in mathematics, I had never been asked to join an editorial board for a journal (though I know that I had been recommended for such a position on more than one occasion). I was nervous to have my first editorial role be editor-in-chief, but I also really believe in the mission of <em>La Matematica<\/em> and what we are trying to build there.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The journal, like other international peer-reviewed journals, aims to feature high-quality research. However, <em>La Matematica<\/em> is also heavily focused on collaboration and inclusion. The journal supports pro-interdisciplinary research and collaborative projects, and supports the flourishing of all mathematicians by adopting equitable practices in <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) publishing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other goals for the journal include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Self-contained articles accessible to mathematicians outside the field<\/li>\n<li>Doubly-anonymous review process<\/li>\n<li>Constructive reviews<\/li>\n<li>Quick reviewer turn-around time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>La Matematica<\/em>\u2019s first issue will be released in early 2022 celebrating the Association for Women in Mathematics\u2019 50th anniversary.
