The program coincides with the publication of a historic new anthology of Native poetry, edited by Harjo, and includes work by all of the program guests. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I\u2019m thrilled to welcome the esteemed Joy Harjo to <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> and to the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Book and Music Festival,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Professor of English <strong>Craig Santos Perez<\/strong>, who will serve as moderator. <\/p>\n<p>Harjo, who is serving her third term as poet laureate, is the author of plays, children\u2019s books, two memoirs and nine books of poetry, including <em>An American Sunrise<\/em>. As a musician, she has produced seven award-winning albums, including <em>I Pray for My Enemies<\/em>. She received the Ruth Lilly Prize for Lifetime Achievement from the Poetry Foundation, <abbr title=\"National Endowment for the Arts\">NEA<\/abbr> and Guggenheim fellowships, and the Academy of American Poets Wallace Stevens Award. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>UH<\/abbr> has become a creative seedbed for Pacific and Native Hawaiian poetry,&rdquo; said <strong>Peter Arnade<\/strong>, dean of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/call\/\">College of Arts, Languages, and Letters<\/a>. &ldquo;It\u2019s exciting that the poet laureate is spotlighting this work and joining us for a conversation with Indigenous poets based in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>Among the Pacific poets on the program are: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/09\/07\/oiwi-poet-professor-national-award-publishing-deal\/\"><strong><span aria-label=\"Nou\">No&#699;u<\/span> Revilla<\/strong><\/a>, a queer <span aria-label=\"Oiwi\">&#699;&#332;iwi<\/span> poet and assistant professor of creative writing at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. She also taught poetry at <span aria-label=\"Puuhuluhulu\">Pu&#699;uhuluhulu<\/span> University. Her first book, <em>Ask the Brindled<\/em>, is forthcoming from Milkweed Editions. She is the winner of the 2021 National Poetry Series Competition. <\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Mahealani Wendt, author of <em>Uluhaim\u0101lama<\/em> (2007) and co-editor of <em><span aria-label=\"Hoolaulea\">Ho&#699;olaule&#699;a<\/span>: Celebrating 10 Years of Pacific Writing<\/em>. She has been published in numerous literary journals and anthologies.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Lehua M. Taitano, familian Kabesa yan Kuetu, a queer Chamoru writer and interdisciplinary artist from Yigu, Gu\u00e5han (Guam) and co-founder of Art 25: Art in the Twenty-fifth Century. She is the author of <em>Inside Me an Island<\/em> and <em>A Bell Made of Stones<\/em>. <\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><strong>Brandy N\u0101lani McDougall<\/strong>, a Kanaka <span aria-label=\"Oiwi\">&#699;&#332;iwi<\/span> poet raised on Maui. She is the author of <em>The Salt-Wind Ka Makani <span aria-label=\"Paakai\">Pa&#699;akai<\/span><\/em> and <em>Finding Meaning: Kaona and Contemporary Hawaiian Literature<\/em>. She is an associate professor of American studies at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Moderator Perez is also an acclaimed poet.
