This year, <strong>Ian Tapu<\/strong>, a recent graduate from the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.hawaii.edu\/\">William S. Richardson School of Law<\/a>, wanted to ensure Honolulu Pride reflected a Native Hawaiian sense of place. Tapu, a queer S&#257;moan-Tongan, followed his vision and joined the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>LGBT<\/abbr> Legacy Foundation to help produce the annual event with the goal of intertwining more of an Indigenous approach that Pacific Islander m&#257;h&#363; (identity with male and female characteristics) in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> can easily connect to.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_150084\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-150084\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/manoa-law-indigenous-lgbt-pride-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"People on the beach\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-150084\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/manoa-law-indigenous-lgbt-pride-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/manoa-law-indigenous-lgbt-pride-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/manoa-law-indigenous-lgbt-pride-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-150084\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pride participants engage in traditional Hawaiian protocol (Photo credit: Mahina Choy-Ellis)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Sometimes, I feel that when we have conversations about or advocate on behalf of the <abbr>LGBTQ&#43;<\/abbr> community, it is framed in a way that separates or distinguishes our other identities,&rdquo; said Tapu. &ldquo;Especially as Indigenous people or people across the moana (ocean), sexuality and gender is part and parcel of what it means to be truly connected to our islands, our ancestors and our culture. If we&#8217;re going to celebrate Pride, I want to make sure we celebrate every aspect of our being.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Tapu helped coordinate a traditional Hawaiian ceremony to officially open Honolulu Pride festivities. Oli (chants) were offered and observed in Waik&#299;k&#299; fronting four large boulders known as the Kapaemahu stones. The stones, located inside a historical monument at K&#363;hi&#333; Beach Park, are believed to be infused with healing powers from four extraordinary beings of dual male and female spirit who brought the healing arts from Tahiti to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii.\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½.<\/span> Participants also have opportunities to hear from Queer Indigenous speakers featured in several virtual forum events.<\/p>\n<p>For Tapu, seeing his vision come to life at Honolulu Pride is truly heart-warming. He calls Pride &ldquo;magical,&rdquo; partly because it\u2019s where he first met his partner, Alika, four years ago. Tapu is currently a law clerk at the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Judiciary.
