However, since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> residents have reported elevated levels of anxiety and depression compared to previous years.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_132866\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-132866\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-social-sciences-jack-barile-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"headshot of Jack Barile\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-132866\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-social-sciences-jack-barile-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-social-sciences-jack-barile-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-social-sciences-jack-barile.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-132866\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jack Barile<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Since summer 2020, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> has frequently ranked in the bottom half of states for symptoms of anxiety and depression, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.15585\/mmwr.mm7040e3\"><em>Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report<\/em><\/a> (<em><abbr>MMWR<\/abbr><\/em>) issued in early October 2021 by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (<abbr>CDC<\/abbr>). The <em><abbr>MMWR<\/abbr><\/em> is one of the highest impact journals in the world and <abbr>CDC<\/abbr>\u2019s flagship journal.<\/p>\n<p>The report finds U.S. adults reported experiencing anxiety and depression symptoms more often from August to December 2020 as the number of new COVID-19 cases rose. Anxiety and depression symptoms decreased in the following months, at the same time that cases decreased, but remained higher than in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is likely that the negative impact of the pandemic on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> residents\u2019 mental health, particularly compared to other states, can be partially explained by the harsh economic fallout associated with a limited tourism industry and subsequent job losses,&rdquo; said <strong>Jack Barile<\/strong>, interim director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ssri.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">Social Science Research Institute<\/a> in the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a> and one of the <em><abbr>MMWR<\/abbr><\/em> study co-authors. &ldquo;And because <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> residents are often only a couple of paychecks away from being unable to cover their debts, any income loss can wreak havoc on their mental health.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Job loss and mental health<\/h2>\n<p>In another recent study co-authored by Barile in the <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/joem\/Fulltext\/2021\/09000\/Investigating_the_Impact_of_Job_Loss_and_Decreased.13.aspx\"><em>Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine<\/em><\/a>, the association between job loss and poor mental health was particularly pronounced among Americans with annual household incomes of less than $85,000 (assessed prior to job loss), and significantly less pronounced among higher annual income households (above $125,000).<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This suggests that people from lower income households are particularly vulnerable to experiencing poor mental health after job loss compared to higher income households,&rdquo; said Barile. &ldquo;While this finding is likely not surprising, it unfortunately reaffirms the host of challenges faced by households who are only a missed paycheck away from financial distress.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Future research<\/h2>\n<p>Barile said research teams are working on several studies aimed at identifying policies that mitigate negative impacts in the work environment, particularly for individuals from lower income households.<\/p>\n<p>This work is an example of <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s goal of <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-2025-strategic-plan.pdf#page=25\">Excellence in Research: Advancing the Research and Creative Work Enterprise<\/a> (<span class=\"small-text\"><abbr title=\"Portable Document Format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/span>), one of four goals identified in the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-2025-strategic-plan.pdf\">2015&#8211;25 Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/a> (<span class=\"small-text\"><abbr title=\"Portable Document Format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/span>), updated in December 2020.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A <abbr>UH<\/abbr> researcher co-authored national studies on the pandemic\u2019s impact on Americans.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":16,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[30],"tags":[301,1411,1417,1363,158,1026,916,9],"class_list":["post-149730","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-research","tag-college-of-social-sciences","tag-covid-19","tag-covid-19-research","tag-manoa-research","tag-publication","tag-social-science","tag-social-science-research-institute","tag-uh-manoa","entry","has-media"],"aioseo_notices":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/149730","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/16"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=149730"}],"version-history":[{"count":4,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/149730\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":149736,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/149730\/revisions\/149736"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=149730"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=149730"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=149730"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
