The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honolulupd.org\/\">Honolulu Police Department<\/a> (<abbr>HPD<\/abbr>) is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joinhonolulupd.org\/\">continuously recruiting<\/a> qualified women and men to join its ranks. Starting pay (including standard of conduct pay) is more than $73,000.<\/p>\n<p>Successful completion of the Honolulu Police Exam is one of the requirements for <abbr>HPD<\/abbr> applicants. The Honolulu Police Exam Preparation Course is one of about 50 free <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Community College classes being offered through <a href=\"https:\/\/oahubacktowork.com\/\"><span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Back to Work<\/a>, a rapid response employment training program for <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> residents who are struggling to find employment.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/system-obw-hpd-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Honolulu Police Department training class\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-149357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/system-obw-hpd-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/system-obw-hpd-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/system-obw-hpd.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It\u2019s very rewarding,&rdquo; <abbr>HPD<\/abbr> Sgt. Brandt Tsuha said about serving as a Honolulu police officer. &ldquo;Great retirement, great benefits, great job satisfaction as far as what you get to do each day, helping people, serving the community, enforcing laws, all those kinds of things that come with the job, and as far as flexibility, to me it\u2019s unmatched.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>There are also other possible motivations to join.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If you see things in the police department that you don\u2019t like or in your community, then I would encourage you to apply and try to become an officer to be a part of that change to make things better,&rdquo; said Tsuha. &ldquo;We\u2019re not a perfect entity. There\u2019s always room for improvement, and we always look for new ideas and new people to help us progress and be better.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>There are currently more than 300 vacancies at <abbr>HPD<\/abbr>. Although there are almost 150 recruits in some form of training, more vacancies are expected annually with end-of-the-year retirements. Passing the entry-level police exam is part of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joinhonolulupd.org\/application-process2.html\">application process<\/a> that includes a physical readiness assessment, a personal history statement, fingerprinting and background investigation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joinhonolulupd.org\/minimum-qualifications2.html\">Minimum qualifications for an <abbr>HPD<\/abbr> recruit include<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At least 21 years old by graduation from the police academy<\/li>\n<li>Valid driver\u2019s license<\/li>\n<li>Meets federal and state firearms possession requirements<\/li>\n<li>Vision and hearing requirements<\/li>\n<li>High school diploma, general education diploma or equivalent<\/li>\n<li>U.S. citizen, U.S. national or legal permanent resident<\/li>\n<li>Meets other selection standards related to a background investigation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Back to Work Honolulu Police Department Exam Preparation course is offered online on Mondays and Wednesdays, 5\u20136:30 p.m. November 8\u2013December 15.  Free tuition and textbooks are included.
