Uluwehi Hopkins<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A Kanaka Maoli (person of Hawaiian ancestry) scholar at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa was awarded an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aauw.org\/\">American Association of University Women<\/a> (<abbr>AAUW<\/abbr>) 2021&#8211;22 fellowship to pursue academic work and lead innovative community projects to empower women and girls.<\/p>\n<p><strong>J. Uluwehi Hopkins<\/strong>, the recipient of <abbr>AAUW<\/abbr>\u2019s Fellowship, is currently pursuing her <abbr title=\"doctor of philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> in Hawaiian history at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/history\/\">Department of History<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Being awarded a fellowship, especially one as prestigious as <abbr>AAUW<\/abbr>, justifies all that hard work and instills a motivation to want to work harder, to be worthy of being chosen,&rdquo; said Hopkins. &ldquo;The thought of this fellowship drives me every day now; it&#8217;s that small niggling in the back of my mind that tells me &lsquo;Keep going! Write more! Finish that chapter!&rsquo;&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/manoa-history-aauw-hopkins-2.jpg\" alt=\"woman headshot\" width=\"300\" height=\"299\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-149301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/manoa-history-aauw-hopkins-2.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/manoa-history-aauw-hopkins-2-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>Born and raised on <span aria-label=\"Oahu,\">O&#699;ahu,<\/span> Hopkins\u2019 lineage on the island dates back several centuries. Her current research focuses on the lands that now make up <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s campus, the water resources that once flowed through that <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> (land), and the community that lived there.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In a way, I was destined to make this my focus: one of my ancestors owned nearly all of the parcels that the M&#257;noa campus now sits on so, without realizing it, I started researching this area when I started researching my own genealogy,&rdquo; said Hopkins. &ldquo;Ultimately, this research isn\u2019t just an academic exploration for me; it\u2019s a passion and a part of my identity.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Uluwehi\u2019s work focuses on the lands and waters of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa area and the role of prominent Kanaka Maoli women like Emma Metcalf Beckley Nakuina who served as water commissioner during the kingdom era and the first several years of the Territory of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; said <strong>John Rosa<\/strong>, an associate professor of history and Hopkins\u2019 advisor. &ldquo;Thus, Uluwehi\u2019s work definitely relates to the <abbr>AAUW<\/abbr>&#8216;s mission of empowering women in university settings and beyond.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>AAUW<\/abbr> is one of the world\u2019s oldest leading supporters of graduate women\u2019s education. For the 2021&#8211;22 academic year, <abbr>AAUW<\/abbr> has awarded a total of $5 million through its fellowships and grants programs to 260 scholars, as well as to community projects and programs that promote education and equity for women and girls.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This fellowship has allowed me to significantly scale back on my teaching hours and focus more completely on writing, and I find that I am much more content with my current situation because of it,&rdquo; said Hopkins. &ldquo;I am incredibly thankful to <abbr>AAUW<\/abbr> for this award, and for them believing that I am a woman who has the potential to foster positive growth in this world.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I have come to realize that my primary goal is to become someone who is an expert in her field, someone who others can go to for information or help, and someone who can inspire others in our community,&rdquo; added Hopkins.<\/p>\n<p>This work is an example of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s goal of <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-2025-strategic-plan.pdf#page=20\">Enhancing Student Success<\/a> (<span class=\"small-text\"><abbr title=\"Portable Document Format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/span>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-2025-strategic-plan.pdf#page=12\">Becoming a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning<\/a> (<span class=\"small-text\"><abbr title=\"Portable Document Format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/span>), two of four goals identified in the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-2025-strategic-plan.pdf\">2015&#8211;25 Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/a> (<span class=\"small-text\"><abbr title=\"Portable Document Format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/span>), updated in December 2020.<\/p>\n<p>To find out more about this year\u2019s class of awardees, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aauw.org\/resources\/programs\/fellowships-grants\/directory-of-recipients-sponsors\/\">visit the online directory<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>J.
