The book documents ties between anti-immigrant hate groups and the Trump administration, which repackaged white supremacist theories of white genocide and &ldquo;the great replacement&rdquo; as mainstream political ideas.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_138891\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-138891\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/manoa-geography-reece-jones-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"head shot of reece jones\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-138891\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/manoa-geography-reece-jones-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/manoa-geography-reece-jones-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/manoa-geography-reece-jones.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-138891\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reece Jones<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;I wrote this book after becoming alarmed by the anti-immigrant turn in American politics over the last few years,&rdquo; said Jones. &ldquo;As I dug into the archives and traveled the borderlands, I realized that&#8212;from the first immigration laws that banned Chinese immigrants to the construction of the border wall today&#8212;racism had been at the heart of immigration restrictions in the United States.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In a starred review, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.libraryjournal.com\/?reviewDetail=white-borders-the-history-of-race-and-immigration-in-the-united-states-from-chinese-exclusion-to-the-border-wall-2121996\">Library Journal<\/a> called <em>White Borders<\/em>, &ldquo;A highly recommended, in-depth history of migration that accounts for lives affected by American border policing and immigration restrictions.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/chireviewofbooks.com\/2021\/09\/28\/white-borders\/\">Chicago Review of Books<\/a> said, &ldquo;Reece Jones explores the tragic, ludicrous, and endlessly violent creation and maintenance of America\u2019s borders&#8230;Jones\u2019s greatest contribution is to show the forces that really drove the Trump campaign.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Jones is a 2021 Guggenheim Fellow and chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/geography.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">Department of Geography and Environment<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a>. He is the author of three other books: the award-winning <em>Violent Borders<\/em> (2016) and <em>Border Walls<\/em> (2012), as well as the forthcoming <em>Nobody is Protected<\/em> (2022).
