Burns School of Medicine<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiipacifichealth.org\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Pacific Health<\/a> have established an academic affiliation agreement to formalize their collaborative efforts around medical education and training, research, clinical services and patient care with the ultimate goal of addressing the health care needs of the state of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. The agreement is a three-party affiliation agreement between <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Pacific Health, the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) and University Health Partners of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> (<abbr>UHP<\/abbr>), <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>\u2019s faculty practice group.<\/p>\n<p>Areas of focus outlined within the agreement that will benefit patients and the state include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Creating synergies and aligning workforces to enhance models of care, strengthen academic programs and further each organization\u2019s mission. <\/li>\n<li>Collaboration on health care education at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Pacific Health medical centers and clinical sites continuing to provide education and training opportunities for residents, medical students, and other university learners.<\/li>\n<li>Enhanced support of research and other scholarly activities in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> that advance medical knowledge and health sciences.<\/li>\n<li>Strengthening partnership efforts on programs and activities that support the next generation of physicians and health care providers for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>Coordination of clinical services and physician engagement in programs designed to improve health care for the residents of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_148383\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-148383\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/manoa-jabsom-hph-family-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"doctor with family\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-148383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/manoa-jabsom-hph-family-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/manoa-jabsom-hph-family-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/manoa-jabsom-hph-family.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-148383\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo courtesy: University Health Partners of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Our hospitals have served as education and training sites for the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the John A. Burns School of Medicine for years, and we are proud to formalize this partnership and further enhance our collaborative efforts,&rdquo; said Ray Vara, president and <abbr title=\"chief executive officer\">CEO<\/abbr> of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Pacific Health. &ldquo;The COVID-19 pandemic has shined a spotlight on how essential it is for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> residents to have access to quality health care, and our partnership with the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> will help us improve the health of our communities and work toward eliminating the disparities and inequities that exist today.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the John A. Burns School of Medicine have partnered with <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Pacific Health on many levels to advance medical education and training to support <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s future health care needs,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President <strong>David Lassner<\/strong>. &ldquo;This new enhanced agreement reinforces our joint commitment to support medical education beginning with medical school through residency and fellowship training.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>As part of the agreement, <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> faculty who provide patient care as <abbr>UHP<\/abbr> physicians in the areas of family medicine and obstetrics and gynecology will be integrated into the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Pacific Health Medical Group (<abbr>HPHMG<\/abbr>), <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Pacific Health\u2019s employed physician and advanced practice provider group.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In order to truly create a healthier <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, we must support the growth and development of the next generation of health care providers for the state,&rdquo; said Leslie Chun, <abbr>HPHMG<\/abbr> <abbr>CEO<\/abbr>. &ldquo;This enhanced partnership with the university and the medical school enables us to ensure high-quality care will continue to be available for our patients in the years ahead, particularly in the areas of family medicine and obstetrics and gynecology, which are areas for which the state has a critical need for more physicians.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>These <abbr>UHP<\/abbr> clinical providers will join other <abbr>HPHMG<\/abbr> employed academic clinicians with <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> faculty appointments in pediatrics and other disciplines. Medical education, research and training activities at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Pacific Health facilities, including <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Medical Center for Women &#38; Children (<abbr>OB<\/abbr>&#8211;<abbr>GYN<\/abbr>) and Pali Momi Medical Center (family medicine), are poised to advance in a highly synergistic manner. <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> will continue to oversee the academic activities of the faculty, and <abbr>UHP<\/abbr> will help sustain support of <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>\u2019s teaching and research mission.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Through this opportunity to build synergy with <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Pacific Health, <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> becomes better positioned to educate and train our next generation of physicians,&rdquo; said <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> Dean <strong>Jerris Hedges<\/strong>. &ldquo;The academic affiliation agreement will focus on practice and training in pediatrics, family medicine and obstetrics &#038; gynecology with <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Pacific Health.
