The forum will breakdown steps the state can take to curtail emissions and prepare for storms, sea-level rise and weather changes. Panelists include Gov. <strong>David Ige<\/strong>; Kevin Chang, co-director of <span aria-label=\"Kuaaina\">Kua&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> Ulu <span aria-label=\"Auamo\">&#699;Auamo<\/span>, a community-based natural resources management group; and internationally acclaimed climate scientist Kim Cobb, director of Georgia Tech\u2019s Global Change Program.<\/p>\n<p>The event is open to the public. (<a href=\"https:\/\/hawaii.zoom.us\/webinar\/register\/WN_IXvHLPZVQqmrRRBDbV2aRw\">Submit questions and register here.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> may be a small state, but we\u2019re having an outsized impact on developing climate solutions,&rdquo; said Ige. &ldquo;We are the only state committed to becoming &lsquo;carbon negative&rsquo; by 2045. We also know there is more work to be done. I\u2019m looking forward to this upcoming conversation connecting climate diplomacy to initiatives underway here in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. We have to coordinate with other states and nations throughout the Pacific to have the impact we need and to get climate ready. This is the challenge of our time, and we have to get it right for the sake of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> keiki.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Addressing climate change effectively requires getting both the science and the policy right,&rdquo; explained <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Provost <strong>Michael Bruno<\/strong>. &ldquo;I look forward to this conversation with Professor Cobb, who as a Pacific paleoclimatologist and geochemist collaborates actively with many of our faculty at M\u0101noa. She has devoted herself not just to advancing climate research but to communicating research findings more effectively to the public.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Cobb is a lead author of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/sixth-assessment-report-cycle\/\">latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report<\/a> which indicates the planet has time to stave off the most catastrophic effects of global warming\u2014but only if bold and coordinated action is taken immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria Keener, a senior research fellow at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastwestcenter.org\/\">East-West Center<\/a> will moderate the online event.<\/p>\n<h2>More on Cobb<\/h2>\n<p>Cobb\u2019s research has been published in Science and other top journals.
