To pay homage to one of the nation\u2019s darkest days, the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/depts\/performingarts\/\">Department of Performing Arts<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/artscenter.uhh.hawaii.edu\/\">Performing Arts Center<\/a> will debut its fall season with the production <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/news\/view\/15246\"><em>Banyan<\/em><\/a>. The play, written by California-based writer Jeannie Barroga, takes place after the attacks and parodies the chaotic moment in history of falling buildings and intertwines symbolic Wizard of Oz icons.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are opening on 9\/11 because this year marks 20 years since that day, and the central character in the play is dealing with the trauma and fallout from that event,&rdquo; said <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo Associate Professor of Drama <strong>Justina Mattos<\/strong>, who directed the production.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_147756\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-147756\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/hilo-performing-arts-center-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"outside of a building\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-147756\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/hilo-performing-arts-center-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/hilo-performing-arts-center-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/hilo-performing-arts-center.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-147756\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo Performing Arts Center (Photo credit: Kirsten Aoyagi)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Due to the pandemic, the performance was filmed over the summer, will premiere virtually on September 11 and run continuously through the 13th. A viewing link will be available here beginning on opening day.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I found out about the existence of this play through a Thursday evening playwrights\u2019 Zoom Hui that I created and have been leading since the start of COVID a year-and-a-half ago,&rdquo; said Mattos. &ldquo;We gather online each week to read works in development, and many of the works have appeared onstage or online after being workshopped with us.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The play\u2019s lead actress is <strong>Rhealiza Pira<\/strong>, a 2017 alumna of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo performing arts and English
