Hoffman, of the <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\">College of Education<\/a> (<abbr>COE<\/abbr>) <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/ltec\/\">Department of Learning Design and Technology<\/a> (<abbr>LTEC<\/abbr>), was awarded nearly $1 million from the National Science Foundation (<abbr title=\"National Science Foundation\">NSF<\/abbr>) for his three-year grant program, Advancing Research and Practice in Culturally-Relevant Computing. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is an opportunity to collaborate with teachers in ways that open up the world of <abbr>CS<\/abbr> while promoting and sustaining <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> unique place, history, culture and language,&rdquo; said Hoffman. &ldquo;By adopting an interdisciplinary stance, we hope to move beyond brief, standardized <abbr>CS<\/abbr> experiences toward something deeper and more personally relevant for learners.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Co-directors of the program include <abbr>LTEC<\/abbr> Associate Professors <strong>Peter Leong<\/strong> and <strong>Seungoh Paek<\/strong>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/kamakakuokalani\/\">Kamakak&#363;okalani Center for Hawaiian Studies<\/a> Associate Specialist <strong>Rochelle <span aria-label=\"Kaaloa\">Ka&#699;aloa<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;For me, this grant represents our commitment to bringing <abbr>CS<\/abbr> education to more elementary students in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> by making it culturally relevant to our keiki,&rdquo; said Leong. &ldquo;Traditionally, most <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr> topics have been taught from a western culture perspective, making it more difficult for Native Hawaiian and Pacific Island students to relate.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>A partnership between <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiipublicschools.org\/Pages\/Home.aspx\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Department of Education<\/a> (<abbr>HIDOE<\/abbr>), the project will provide 230 elementary educators professional development in how to promote <abbr>CS<\/abbr> and valued culture-based outcomes.
