The month-long virtual celebration spearheaded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiiponoi.info\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Ponoi\">Pono&#699;&#299;<\/span> Coalition<\/a> in collaboration with the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuakea\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½nu&#257;kea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge<\/a> commences on Thursday, September 2, in honor of Queen <span aria-label=\"Liliuokalani\">Lili&#699;uokalani<\/span>\u2019s 183rd birthday.<\/p>\n<p>This year, as <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s crippling COVID-19 surge wells up revamped feelings of uncertainty and high case counts within the Native Hawaiian community, organizers hope members of the l\u0101hui (nation) will be inspired by milestones from the queen\u2019s legacy for guidance through the pandemic\u2019s challenges.<\/p>\n<p>In 1881, <span aria-label=\"Liliuokalani\">Lili&#699;uokalani<\/span> served as queen regent for her brother, King David <span aria-label=\"Laamea\">La&#699;amea<\/span> Kal\u0101kaua, while he was on his year-long world tour. Just weeks after the king departed, a virulent outbreak of smallpox impacted Honolulu. To prevent the disease from spreading, <span aria-label=\"Liliuokalani\">Lili&#699;uokalani<\/span> imposed a strict quarantine and was praised for saving thousands of lives.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We hope people take away that Queen <span aria-label=\"Liliuokalani\">Lili&#699;uokalani<\/span> was a leader that created solutions for our people and the larger community and took action even when it was a hard decision to make. Our Hawaiian history and our &#699;ike kupuna (ancestral wisdom) shows us the solutions and the path ahead,&rdquo; said <strong>Malia Nobrega<\/strong>, director of strategic partnerships at <span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuakea\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½nu&#257;kea<\/span> and who has helped organize the month-long celebration.<\/p>\n<p>Among the wide variety of programs planned for the five-week online event will include a series of discussions on Hawaiian health. The <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/departments\/dnhh\/\">Native Hawaiian Health department<\/a> from <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">John A. The <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/liveonstage\/theatre\/hawaiian-theatre\/\">Hawaiian Theatre program<\/a> at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa will also take the spotlight during the celebration.
