Meanwhile, Waik&#299;k&#299; Aquarium will temporarily transfer 13-year-old male Hawaiian monk seal KP2 to the research program in California while the monk seal exhibit at the aquarium is updated and renovated.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_147372\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-147372\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/waikiki-aquarium-monk-seal-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"monk seal with person\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-147372\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/waikiki-aquarium-monk-seal-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/waikiki-aquarium-monk-seal-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/waikiki-aquarium-monk-seal-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-147372\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo credit: Waik&#299;k&#299; Aquarium)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;The Waik&#299;k&#299; Aquarium is grateful for this opportunity to work closely with the University of California Santa Cruz and its partners to support conservation efforts for Hawaiian monk seals and education about this endangered species,&rdquo; said <strong>Andrew Rossiter<\/strong>, director of the Waik&#299;k&#299; Aquarium. &ldquo;This will allow us to renovate our monk seal exhibit so we can continue to help in future research and protection efforts.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>KP2 previously spent several years at Long Marine Laboratory participating in cooperative research. His planned sabbatical will allow scientists to support ongoing studies of auditory biology and provide insight into how monk seal metabolism changes throughout development.<\/p>\n<p>These studies support conservation efforts for wild monk seals by providing relevant biological data from non-releasable male monk seals trained to cooperate in scientific sampling. Such information is often difficult or impossible to gather from free-ranging seals. Measurements are obtained by animal care specialists without harm to seals, and research activities are monitored by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.<\/p>\n<p>Research with non-releasable Hawaiian monk seals is authorized by <abbr title=\"National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\">NOAA<\/abbr> Fisheries. The planned research activities involving monk seals KE18 and KP2 are supported by the U.S. Navy\u2019s Office of Naval Research and Living Marine Resources Program.
