(Photo credit: <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Born and raised on Maui, University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa alumna <strong>Michaela Johnson<\/strong> developed a deep love for the ocean and interest in understanding and conserving marine life.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I always knew that I wanted to pursue a scientific career, but struggled for a long time finding the right degree for me because I had so many areas of interest,&rdquo; Johnson said. &ldquo;When I discovered the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/oceanography\/ges\/\">Global Environmental Science<\/a> (<abbr>GES<\/abbr>) degree, I finally felt like I had found a program that I could make my own while still providing me with a solid scientific foundation.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_147189\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-147189\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-soest-michaela-johnson.jpg\" alt=\"woman smiling\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-147189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-soest-michaela-johnson.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-soest-michaela-johnson-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-soest-michaela-johnson-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-147189\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michaela Johnson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Through the <abbr>GES<\/abbr> bachelor of science degree program in <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> (<abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>), Department of Oceanography, Johnson connected with Professor of biology <strong>Amy Moran<\/strong> to conduct her senior thesis research.<\/p>\n<p>With Moran\u2019s guidance, Johnson studied embryonic <em>Siphonaria normalis<\/em>, which is a native false limpet (or false <span aria-label=\"opihi\">&#699;opihi)<\/span> that is abundant in the rocky intertidal areas around <span aria-label=\"Hawaii.\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½.<\/span> They were interested in how tolerant the marine snail is to warm ocean water. During her project, Johnson discovered that <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> intertidal waters can sometimes reach temperatures that lead to higher mortality of these animals.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;With climate change increasing average global temperatures, Siphonaria normalis embryos will likely be at a higher risk of mortality and we may see a decline in their populations on our rocky shorelines,&rdquo; Johnson added. &ldquo;A change in the abundance of these herbivorous snails may have a future impact on the community assemblage in our intertidal ecosystems.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_147187\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-147187\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-soest-marine-snails-2.jpg\" alt=\"marine snails\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-147187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-soest-marine-snails-2.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-soest-marine-snails-2-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-147187\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adult <em>Siphonaria normalis<\/em>, false limpets native to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. (Photo credit: <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When asked about the value of her research experience, Johnson said, &ldquo;The thesis project allowed a unique opportunity to explore what my future career in research could be like.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Now that she has graduated, Johnson is continuing her internship at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.himb.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Institute of Marine Biology<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/himbsharklab.com\/\">Shark Lab<\/a> to assist with research activities and gain additional work experience in marine wildlife conservation. The Shark Lab conducts lab and field work to investigate the behavior and ecology of sharks and other fishes, which helps to inform management strategies of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii's\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½&#8217;s<\/span> marine ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I hope to continue my academic career in graduate school once I determine what I would like my scientific niche to be,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;Regardless of the specific field I choose to pursue, I know that I&#8217;ll focus on protecting <span aria-label=\"Hawaii's\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½&#8217;s<\/span> ocean ecosystems.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>This effort is an example of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s goal of <a
