Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>), was awarded the 2021 Excellence in Public Health Award from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usphs.gov\/\"><abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> Public Health Service<\/a> (<abbr>USPHS<\/abbr>). He becomes only the fourth <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> student in the school\u2019s history to receive this top award for medical students. Galiza was recognized for his engagement in advocacy and health policy and his drive to fight for health equity, which stems from his personal experiences as a first-generation Filipinx-American whose parents immigrated to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> from the Philippines.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_146979\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-146979\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-jabsom-galiza-black-lives-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-146979\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-jabsom-galiza-black-lives-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-jabsom-galiza-black-lives-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-jabsom-galiza-black-lives.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-146979\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Galiza at the student-organized #WhiteCoats4BlackLives rally at JABSOM in June 2020.<br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The national award is given to medical students who are public health champions advancing the <abbr>USPHS<\/abbr> mission to &ldquo;protect, promote, and advance the health and safety of our nation&rdquo; and who are helping address public health issues in their community. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I have an intimate understanding of the challenges our underserved face and a passion for their social justice in medicine,&rdquo; Galiza said. &ldquo;As a future physician and community leader, it is my life\u2019s calling&#8212;my kuleana (deep-seated privilege and responsibility).&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Congratulations to Jester Galiza on being awarded the prestigious 2021 Excellence in Public Health Award,&rdquo; said <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> Director of Student Affairs <strong>Lawrence Burgess<\/strong>, who nominated Galiza. &ldquo;Only one nominee is awarded per medical school annually,&rdquo; he said. Of the total number of nominees across the country last year, 110 students were ultimately selected. <\/p>\n<p>Raised in <span aria-label=\"Ewa\">&#699;Ewa<\/span> Beach, <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and a graduate of Campbell High School, Galiza lived and witnessed firsthand the unfortunate reality of how one\u2019s zip code or ethnic background has the potential to dictate social and medical outcomes. He went on to receive his bachelor\u2019s degree in biology at Dartmouth College and a master\u2019s degree in education from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. <\/p>\n<h2>Advocating for social and health equity<\/h2>\n<p>By undertaking many leadership roles as a medical student at JABSOM, Galiza has influenced many of his peers to engage in his quest to achieve health equity. His titles include inter-class council president, director of advocacy and activism for the Partnership for Social Justice, president for Primary Care Progress and co-president for the American Medical Association\/Hawaii Medical Association Student Chapter.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_146928\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-146928\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-galiza-imi-hoola-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-146928\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-galiza-imi-hoola-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-galiza-imi-hoola-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-galiza-imi-hoola.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-146928\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Galiza with other <span aria-label=\"Imi\">&#699;Imi<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hoola\">Ho&#699;&#333;la<\/span> alumni and <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>&#8216;s Winona Lee at the state Capitol.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Galiza has spearheaded events to advocate for issues in social and health equity and has engaged his fellow medical students to make a difference in the community through the legislative process.<br \/>\nFor example, he organized a group of medical students to attend a roundtable with Lt. Gov. Josh Green at the state Capitol, alongside other stakeholders to talk about the rampant use of e-cigarettes among <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s youth.
