University of Â鶹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> Marilyn Moniz-Kahoʻohanohano<\/span> has been inducted into the American Volleyball Coaches Association\u2019s<\/a> (AVCA<\/abbr>) Hall of Fame. The class of 2021 inductees will be formally recognized during the Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon on December 16.<\/p>\n

Moniz-Kahoʻohanohano<\/span> was selected in the administrator category. The former Rainbow Wahine volleyball<\/a> player served as UH<\/abbr>\u2019s senior woman administrator and associate athletics director for nearly three decades and was an instrumental figure in collegiate indoor and beach volleyball on both a local and national scale.<\/p>\n

When she took the court in 1972 as part of the first Rainbow Wahine women\u2019s volleyball team, Moniz-Kahoʻohanohano<\/span> began what has been a decade\u2019s-long love affair with both the sport and her school. After her playing days were over she returned to UH<\/abbr> in 1989, performing groundbreaking work until her retirement in 2017.<\/p>\n

She helped elevate Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> volleyball on the national stage, not only in terms of competitiveness and attendance, but also facilities and media coverage. The Rainbow Wahine program consistently ranked atop Division I<\/abbr> schools in attendance, and Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> was the first school to have its home matches televised. During that period, UH<\/abbr> began charging admission, and women\u2019s volleyball became a revenue-generating sport. Moniz-Kahoʻohanohano<\/span>\u2019s tireless efforts helped the beach volleyball gain NCAA<\/abbr> championship status.<\/p>\n

“Beach volleyball would not exist at the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> without Marilyn Moniz-Kahoʻohanohano<\/span>; in fact, it is easy to argue the sport would not exist in the NCAA<\/abbr> without her,” said UH<\/abbr> Athletics Director David Matlin. “As a prominent member of the NCAA<\/abbr> Committee on Women\u2019s Athletics, Marilyn helped jump-start beach volleyball, then known as sand volleyball, from an emerging sport to the NCAA<\/abbr>‘s 90th championship sport within a record four years.”<\/p>\n

Moniz-Kahoʻohanohano<\/span> is the third member of the UH<\/abbr> ʻohana<\/span> to gain the distinction, joining Deitre Collins-Parker (2008) and Dave Shoji (2010).<\/p>\n

The other three inductees in the AVCA<\/abbr> class of 2021 are coaches Jim McLaughlin, Jim Stone and Beverly Williams.<\/p>\n
