This year\u2019s number represents a $35.1 million or 7.8&#37; increase over <abbr>FY<\/abbr>2020 and is just $3.1 million shy of <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s best extramural funding year total of $488.6 million in <abbr>FY<\/abbr>2011.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/manoa-pygmy-killer-whale-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"whales swimming\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-139274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/manoa-pygmy-killer-whale-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/manoa-pygmy-killer-whale-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/manoa-pygmy-killer-whale.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa<\/a>, the flagship campus of <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s 10-campus system, topped the extramural award amounts this year with $352.6 million, while the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System brought in $85.6 million, <a href=\"https:\/\/uhcc.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Community Colleges<\/a> totaled $28.35 million, and <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo<\/a> received $15.97 million.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Despite having almost every aspect of our personal and work lives disrupted by the virus, our dedicated and hard-working faculty, staff and graduate students have remained focused and resilient to the task at hand,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Vice President for Research and Innovation <strong>Vassilis <abbr>L<\/abbr>. Syrmos<\/strong>. &ldquo;Their tireless efforts have kept the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> research enterprise moving full speed ahead and on the right trajectory&#8212;positively contributing to the well-being of our institution, state, nation and beyond.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-research-extramural-funding-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-146599\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-research-extramural-funding-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-research-extramural-funding-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-research-extramural-funding.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Extramural funding is defined as external investments from governmental agencies such as the federal government, industry and non-profit organizations that support research and training activities conducted by university faculty and staff that are directed toward research and innovation that helps to increase knowledge and provide solutions to improve quality of life.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Once again, I would like to congratulate the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa research <span aria-label=\"ohana\">&#699;ohana<\/span> for their outstanding and innovative contributions that have led to this year\u2019s near-record extramural funding tally for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> in less-than-ideal circumstances,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Interim Vice Chancellor for Research <strong>Velma <abbr>A<\/abbr>. Kameoka<\/strong>. &ldquo;As our top-notch faculty continue to inspire our students with their research and creativity, I would also like to recognize the unsung efforts of our hard-working postdocs, student research assistants and staff for their dedication to help keep the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> research enterprise strong and resilient.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Several examples of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> programs that attracted the attention of funders:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/uhcc.hawaii.edu\/ovpcc\/\">Office of the Vice President for Community Colleges<\/a> was awarded $13.37 million from the U.S. Department of Education for a three-year project to help train 3,560 displaced, new and underemployed workers for in-demand living-wage jobs in the healthcare, skilled trades and technology sectors.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/\">National Institutes of Health<\/a> awarded $6.6 million to the <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a>\u2019s <abbr>IDeA<\/abbr> Networks for Biomedical Research Excellence IV-<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Statewide Research and Education Partnership (<abbr>INBRE IV-HISREP<\/abbr>). <abbr>HISREP<\/abbr> serves as a catalyst for the advancement of the research scientist pipeline to help elevate the biomedical research community to make new and important health discoveries in the state.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/\">National Science Foundation<\/a> awarded $4.5 million to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> (<abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>) to extend its venerable <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Ocean Time-series into its fourth decade of sustained observations of ocean ecosystem variability.<\/li>\n<li><abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> was awarded $4.0 million by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onr.navy.mil\/\">Office of Naval Research<\/a> to establish the Climate Resilience Initiative at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, with the first phase focusing on sea-level rise monitoring and partnership building among key stakeholders.<\/li>\n<li>The National Institutes of Health awarded $3.8 million to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhcancercenter.org\/\"> <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Cancer Center<\/a> to continue its important Multiethnic Cohort Study.<\/li>\n<li><abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant College Program<\/a> was awarded $2.14 million by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/\">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/a> to fund an aquaculture extension agent for four years to build the state\u2019s capacity in the field.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This year\u2019s number represents a $35.1 million or 7.8&#37; increase over <abbr>FY<\/abbr>2020.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":16,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[30],"tags":[1411,1417,31,1363,92,635,71,14,9,438,947,1013],"class_list":["post-146581","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-research","tag-covid-19","tag-covid-19-research","tag-john-a-burns-school-of-medicine","tag-manoa-research","tag-school-of-ocean-and-earth-science-and-technology","tag-sea-grant-college-program","tag-uh-community-colleges","tag-uh-hilo","tag-uh-manoa","tag-uh-sea-grant","tag-uh-system","tag-university-system-recognition","entry","has-media"],"aioseo_notices":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/146581","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/16"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=146581"}],"version-history":[{"count":6,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/146581\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":146620,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/146581\/revisions\/146620"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=146581"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=146581"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=146581"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
