In fall 2021, the campus will become the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/12\/17\/sustainability-certification-uhcc\/\">sixth University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College<\/a> to offer an Academic Subject Certificate (<abbr>ASC<\/abbr>) in Sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The need for individuals with knowledge about sustainability is growing, in our island communities, in our world, and in our workforce,&rdquo; said <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> Sustainability Initiatives Coordinator <strong>Charlotte Cheek<\/strong>. &ldquo;Graduates with this certificate will learn how to be part of the solution. The certificate can be earned alongside any <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> degree program.<\/p>\n<p>Students will have opportunities to pursue their passions and learn in dynamic places, ranging from <span aria-label=\"loi\">lo&#699;i<\/span> kalo (taro patches) to science labs.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I would like to express how incredibly excited we are about the debut of our Academic Subject Certificate in Sustainability!&rdquo; said <strong>Drew Kapp<\/strong>, geography instructor and co-chair of the Academic Sustainability Committee. &ldquo;Many members of our kauhale (village) have already been teaching, learning, working and living sustainability, and it\u2019s just amazing that now our students can earn a certificate in a subject that speaks to this holistic understanding of and relationship with our <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span>, wai, kai&#8212;so very appropriate, timely and critical for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> nei.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The certificate consists of four three-credit sustainability designated classes. Students must take one course in each of three areas\u2014natural science, social science and Hawaiian studies.
