A nine-week summer research and learning experience culminated with virtual presentations to fellow students, faculty, staff and invited guests.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/undergrad\/urop\/\">Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program<\/a> (<abbr>UROP<\/abbr>), 85 undergraduate students&#8212;working individually or in groups&#8212;showcased their projects at the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/undergrad\/urop\/student-opportunities\/sure\/sure-symposium-3\/\">2021 Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (<abbr>SURE<\/abbr>) Symposium<\/a>, July 30.<\/p>\n<p>This was <abbr>UROP<\/abbr>\u2019s largest ever <abbr>SURE<\/abbr> Symposium, which is estimated to have drawn more than 350 people. The annual event provides undergraduate students the opportunity to showcase their work, while also receiving feedback from peers, experts and community members.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The <abbr>SURE<\/abbr> Symposium gives students a stage to show off their impressive research and creative work during the summer, an otherwise quiet time when they may not get much attention or recognition from the community at large,&rdquo; <abbr>UROP<\/abbr> Coordinator <strong>Jessie Chen<\/strong> said. &ldquo;We want students to know that summer can be a great time to really tap into the resources we offer at <abbr>UROP<\/abbr>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>The <span aria-label=\"Liliu\">Lili&#699;u<\/span> Project<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_145961\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-145961\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-urop-sure-symposium-liliu-project-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"three people sitting down on a chair facing other way\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-145961\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-urop-sure-symposium-liliu-project-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-urop-sure-symposium-liliu-project-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-urop-sure-symposium-liliu-project.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-145961\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Screenshot from The <span aria-label=\"Liliu\">Lili&#699;u<\/span> Project<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A first-ever documentary film on the music of Queen <span aria-label=\"Liliuokalani\">Lili&#699;uokalani<\/span>, the project years-in-the-making by <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> students celebrates her work by incorporating two narratives: a historical biography and contemporary interpretations of the queen\u2019s work. The students use archival photos, recordings, film clips and interviews, interwoven with recent work of local musicians Starr Kalahiki and John Signor updating, rehearsing and performing the queen\u2019s songs all over the world. Born out of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leeward.hawaii.edu\">Leeward Community College<\/a> several years ago, creators of this unique project are wrapping up their research and diving into production.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our team has been hard at work this summer. In addition to preparing for the <abbr>SURE<\/abbr> Symposium, our team has been conducting interviews with notable figures in the Hawaiian community and experts in the field,&rdquo; said <strong>Aleta Hammerich<\/strong>, one of the film\u2019s producers and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa junior <a href=\"https:\/\/politicalscience.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">political science<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/acm.hawaii.edu\/#tracks\">creative media<\/a> major.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We&#8217;ve also been transcribing these interviews, applying for grants, searching state and national archives for historical photos, manuscripts and archival films, hosting Zoom meetings with experts on the neighboring islands and the North American Continent, and editing specific segments of the film that will later coalesce to form the final film.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Under the guidance of <a href=\"http:\/\/acm.hawaii.edu\/\">Academy for Creative Media<\/a> Associate Professor <strong>Joel Moffett<\/strong>, student creators eventually hope audiences of the film will have a greater understanding and appreciation for the queen&#8217;s music.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We hope to provide viewers with a uniquely intimate and timely perspective into <span aria-label=\"Liliuokalani\">Lili&#699;uokalani<\/span>&#8216;s life,&rdquo; said <strong>Justin Ocampo<\/strong>, film co-director and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa junior <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/amst\/\">American studies<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/acm.hawaii.edu\/#tracks\">digital cinema<\/a> major. &ldquo;Specifically, we hope to provide a point of accessibility into her perceptions of the human condition (love, romance, loss); her fierce love for her people and the <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;\u0101ina<\/span> (land); the guiding role of her Christian faith; her diplomatic role as a stateswoman; her willingness to innovate and challenge the status quo; and above all, her grace in the face of seemingly insurmountable and destructive forces.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The project team hopes to release the film in spring 2023.<\/p>\n<h2>Urban agriculture in Honolulu<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-urop-sure-symposium-urban-ag-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"plants in pots\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-145963\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-urop-sure-symposium-urban-ag-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-urop-sure-symposium-urban-ag-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/manoa-urop-sure-symposium-urban-ag.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s heavy reliance on imported goods and the future impact of climate change on food production are just two of the reasons why a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/oceanography\/ges\/\">global environmental science<\/a> senior focused her project on urban agriculture (vertical farming, community gardens, hydroponics and greenhouses) in Honolulu. In this public impact research project, <strong>Seraphina King<\/strong> conducted interviews with stakeholders, and reviewed existing literature and case studies to determine how Honolulu government and non-governmental organizations are engaging in urban agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The research is ongoing. So far, I would say that urban agriculture could have positive outcomes for Honolulu,&rdquo; King said. &ldquo;However, it is hard to implement due to competing land uses and current policies that limit zoning. My research seems to point to what some scholars have said about urban agriculture&#8212;it cannot be a substitute for food imports but could bolster community resilience.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>King, who was mentored by <a href=\"https:\/\/durp.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">Department of Urban and Regional Planning<\/a> Associate Professor <strong>Priyam Das<\/strong>, said she hoped attendees of her presentation gained a &ldquo;better understanding of urban agriculture and what it can offer in terms of expanding food production in cities.&rdquo; She added, &ldquo;It might even spark interest in thinking of ways they want to become engaged in urban agriculture projects in their communities.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2><abbr>UROP<\/abbr> funding support<\/h2>\n<p>The <span aria-label=\"Liliu\">Lili&#699;u<\/span> Project earned <abbr>UROP<\/abbr>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/undergrad\/urop\/for-faculty\/grants\/faculty-mentor-grant-for-summer-undergraduate-research-and-creative-work\/\">faculty mentoring grant<\/a> of up to $15,000 for summer undergraduate research and creative work, while the project on urban agriculture received <abbr>UROP<\/abbr> <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/undergrad\/urop\/student-funding\/project\/about\/\">project funding<\/a>.
