  {"id":14488,"date":"2013-02-26T10:15:27","date_gmt":"2013-02-26T20:15:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=14488"},"modified":"2021-11-30T14:04:27","modified_gmt":"2021-12-01T00:04:27","slug":"regents-approve-undocumented-immigrant-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/02\/26\/regents-approve-undocumented-immigrant-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"Regents approve undocumented immigrant policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_14525\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14525\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/students2.jpg\" alt=\"Classroom of students\" width=\"400\" height=\"237\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/students2.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/students2-260x154.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14525\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Undocumented students who meet certain conditions will now be eligible to pay resident tuition to attend <abbr>UH<\/abbr> campuses.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/offices\/bor\/\">Board of Regents<\/a> approved a new policy at its February 2013 meeting that will allow undocumented immigrants, under certain circumstances, to be eligible for and pay resident tuition at all <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> campuses.<\/p>\n<p>Undocumented students are students who are not U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents, or non-immigrant aliens; and do not possess legal documentation of their immigration status.<\/p>\n<p>According to the policy, undocumented students who meet the following conditions shall be considered residents of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> for purposes of tuition, financial assistance, and university program participation to the full extent permitted under federal law and not specifically prohibited in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Administrative Rules:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Establish domicile as per HAR 20-4; attended a public or private high school in the United States for at least three years, and graduated from a public or private high school, or attained the equivalent thereof in the United States.<\/li>\n<li>Filed for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services; or has filed an application for legal immigration status, or has filed an affidavit with the university affirming the student&#8217;s intent to file such application as soon as the student is able.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Currently, 12 other states have policies in place that allow undocumented immigrants to pay in-state resident tuition. In 2012, two states added it legislatively and two states did so via <abbr title=\"Board of Regents\">BOR<\/abbr> policy change.
