The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> runs the <a href=\"http:\/\/weather.hawaii.edu\/vmap\/index.cgi\">Vog Measurement and Prediction Project<\/a>, part of which predicts the vog plume&#8217;s movement.<\/p>\n<p>Co-principal investigators <strong>Steve Businger<\/strong> and <strong>Keith Horton<\/strong> head the vog project. Businger says, &ldquo;Vog represents a tangible health hazard for those of us in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> who are sensitive to it. During vog episodes, every breath can cause distress. For folks who suffer from allergies, emphysema or asthma, having a vog model that forecasts the position of the plume helps them plan their activities to minimize their exposure.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Good planning depends on good science. Sea-level rise is a longer-term example of this.
