Centeio<\/strong> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/krs\/\">Department of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science<\/a> is the recipient of the grant.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is an amazing opportunity to design and implement culturally relevant health and wellness programming that will bring important resources to our schools and the keiki that they serve,&rdquo; Centeio said. &ldquo;Especially given the last year and a half with COVID-19, we know that our youth need the support and knowledge to improve their social, emotional and physical well-being, and we can\u2019t wait to get started.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>A collaborative effort<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_144607\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-144607\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/manoa-education-kuulei-serna-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"person smiling at camera\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-144607\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/manoa-education-kuulei-serna-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/manoa-education-kuulei-serna-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/manoa-education-kuulei-serna.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-144607\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span aria-label=\"Kuulei\">Ku&#699;ulei<\/span> Serna<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Under the direction of Centeio and College of Education <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/elem\/\">Institute for Teacher Education Elementary<\/a> Director <strong><span aria-label=\"Kuulei\">Ku&#699;ulei<\/span> Serna<\/strong>, I <span aria-label=\"Paa\">Pa&#699;a<\/span> Ka Huewai Pawehe is a partnership between Âé¶¹´«Ã½M\u0101noa, the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Education, the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Health and Hip Hop Public Health.<\/p>\n<p>The program will strategically partner with 20 schools, spanning four complex areas, all with high populations of Native Hawaiian students.<\/p>\n<p>Serna, who serves as the health and trauma content expert, said &ldquo;I am so excited to work with our partners and schools to provide intentional programming to support the health and well-being of some of our most vulnerable populations in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, more specifically school-aged youth and Native Hawaiians.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>There are four components of I <span aria-label=\"Paa\">Pa&#699;a<\/span> Ka Huewai Pawehe:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Professional development and implementation of culturally relevant and trauma-informed teaching strategies<\/li>\n<li>Professional development and implementation of quality health education and physical education<\/li>\n<li>Integration of physical activity throughout the school day that incorporates social-emotional learning, science and math, as well as Native Hawaiian history and culture<\/li>\n<li>Integration of dual credit courses to help recruit Native Hawaiian youth into health professions and instill the importance of overall health in life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;This grant will allow us to execute what we fundamentally believe is true about educating the &lsquo;whole child.&rsquo; The promotion of healthy social, mental, emotional and physical behaviors positively impacts academic achievement,&rdquo; Serna said.<\/p>\n<p>This program is an example of <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s goals of <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-2025-strategic-plan.pdf#page=12\">Becoming a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning<\/a> (<span class=\"small-text\"><abbr title=\"Portable Document Format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/span>), <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-2025-strategic-plan.pdf#page=20\">Enhancing Student Success<\/a> (<span class=\"small-text\"><abbr title=\"Portable Document Format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/span>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-2025-strategic-plan.pdf#page=25\">Excellence in Research: Advancing the Research and Creative Work Enterprise<\/a> (<span class=\"small-text\"><abbr title=\"Portable Document Format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/span>), three of four goals identified in the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-2025-strategic-plan.pdf\">2015&#8211;25 Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/a> (<span class=\"small-text\"><abbr title=\"Portable Document Format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/span>), updated in December 2020.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The grant was awarded to Associate Professor Erin E.
