(Photo provided by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo College of Pharmacy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/offices\/bor\/\">Board of Regents<\/a> approved a package at its monthly meeting on February 21 that names four University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> programs or facilities on four islands in honor of the late Senator Daniel K. Inouye.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Senator Inouye impacted the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> in ways that cannot be measured. We are deeply grateful to the senator for his years of support and for all that he has done for us,&rdquo; said <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> President <strong>M.R.C. Greenwood<\/strong>. &ldquo;Today&#8217;s board action gives us the opportunity to thank Senator Inouye and to emphasize the many things he helped us accomplish and the many things he has inspired us to accomplish in the future.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>The Daniel K. Inouye Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education, <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa<\/h2>\n<p>Inouye was a staunch advocate for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education and basic research. He was a strong supporter of <a href=\"http:\/\/cmore.soest.hawaii.edu\/index.htm\">C-MORE<\/a> and its research, education and outreach missions. His efforts significantly enhanced the capacity for research at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, especially in the area of marine science. Inouye participated in C-MORE Hale&#8217;s groundbreaking in 2009 and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/malamalama\/2010\/10\/c-more-hale\/\">grand opening in 2010<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>The Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy, <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo<\/h2>\n<p>One of Inouye&#8217;s passions was improving healthcare in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, particularly in rural populations. In 2000, Inouye began his quest to create something important on the Big Island. His vision was the <a href=\"http:\/\/pharmacy.uhh.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Pharmacy<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a>. It opened in 2007 and has been ranked in the top five new schools of pharmacy in the country by <em>U.S. News and World Report<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>The Daniel K. Inouye Allied Health Center, <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Maui College<\/h2>\n<p>Inouye was a champion for nursing, allied health and the well-being of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> residents. His commitment to the neighbor islands and particularly to Maui, the home of his mother, continued for years. The Allied Health Center primarily supports dental assisting and dental hygiene programs at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maui.hawaii.edu\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Maui College<\/a> that grew out of community need.<\/p>\n<h2>The Daniel K. Inouye Electronics Technology Building, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College<\/h2>\n<p>Inouye was instrumental in helping <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kauai.hawaii.edu\"><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College<\/a> establish a strong relationship between its electronics program and the U.S. Navy&#8217;s Pacific Missile Range Facility. He worked with <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> to secure <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/malamalama\/2005\/01\/f1_photonic.html\">equipment donations from Boeing<\/a> for an optics lab. He was also a steadfast supporter of the college&#8217;s movement toward stronger STEM programs. The building houses the electronics program, the Cisco Networking Academy, Optics Lab and <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>&#8217;s <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Space Flight Lab.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Science, health and technology programs and facilities at four <abbr>UH<\/abbr> campuses on four islands will be named in honor of the late Senator Daniel K.
