Chancellor <strong>Lui Hokoana<\/strong> emphasized that the overwhelming majority of the 600 <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Maui College graduates and 121 <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Center graduates wanted it to be that way, and he was filled with joy and hope.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/maui-commencement-2021-oli-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Woman performing opening oli\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-143348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/maui-commencement-2021-oli-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/maui-commencement-2021-oli-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/maui-commencement-2021-oli.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\t<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is the first large gathering since the pandemic,&rdquo; Hokoana said. &ldquo;It signals that we are returning to some semblance of normalcy.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The ceremonies were governed by strict health and safety protocols&#8212;a limited number of graduates\u2019 family members and friends were invited, chairs were set far apart and everyone in the audience and all graduates were required to wear masks, even though the event was outdoors.<\/p>\n<p>Amid all the usual pomp and circumstance, which was anything but usual this year, the chancellor praised the students, faculty and staff for persevering through a most challenging pandemic year and for serving Maui Nui valiantly throughout.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_143349\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-143349\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/maui-commencement-2021-simeon-s-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Sheldon Simeon\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-143349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/maui-commencement-2021-simeon-s-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/maui-commencement-2021-simeon-s-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/maui-commencement-2021-simeon-s.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-143349\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sheldon Simeon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Check out more 2021 spring <abbr>UH<\/abbr> grad photos:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/05\/19\/photos-spring-2021-grads\/\">Photos: Congratulations spring 2021 <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> grads!<\/a>, May 19, 2021<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hokoana said, &ldquo;They are distinguished by their service&#8212;our nursing students administered vaccines from the beginning, our culinary students served the vaccination clinic volunteers from the beginning, our engineering techs made face shields, our campus served contact tracers with classroom space, and our campus remains a mass vaccination site.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The commencement speaker at the late afternoon ceremony was, arguably, the <a href=\"http:\/\/maui.hawaii.edu\/programs\/culn\/\">culinary arts program<\/a>\u2019s most famous graduate. Chef <strong>Sheldon Simeon<\/strong>, owns the restaurant Tin Roof in Kahului with his wife Janice, competed on Bravo\u2019s Top Chef (two-time fan favorite) and authored the cookbook <em>Cook Real <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/em>.
