Remotely? The online news series is written and produced by journalism students in the <a href=\"https:\/\/communications.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Communications<\/a> in the <a href=\"http:\/\/socialsciences.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a> (<abbr>CSS<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s Telly Awards are a significant recognition for the student teams who were in the midst of writing and producing <em><abbr>UHMtv<\/abbr><\/em>, their online news series, when the pandemic abruptly closed the campus and shuttered the state.<\/p>\n<p>Students were honored in the General&#8212;Television category at this year\u2019s 42nd Annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tellyawards.com\/\">Telly Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Silver Telly Award for <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Dq8mv5x1Zs0\"><em><abbr>UHMtv<\/abbr><\/em> show <abbr>No.<\/abbr> 22<\/a>: Produced in fall 2020 by student producers <strong>Aloha Lau<\/strong> and <strong>Elizabeth Ufi<\/strong>, with student anchors <strong>Sophia Compton<\/strong> and <strong>Sami Jo Sexton<\/strong>. Stories included how Pacific Islanders were helping to slow the spread of COVID-19 in their communities; a program giving financial relief to students in need; and an exclusive interview with State House Speaker Scott Saiki.<\/li>\n<li>Bronze Telly Award for <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/JR63IDspk0w\"><em><abbr>UHMtv<\/abbr><\/em> show <abbr>No.<\/abbr> 20<\/a>: Produced in spring 2020 by student producers <strong>Troy Jacobs<\/strong> and <strong>Carina Nocon<\/strong>, with student anchors <strong>Megan Lucas<\/strong> and Nocon. Stories included <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s response to the pandemic and subsequent cancelation of commencement ceremonies; how <abbr>UH<\/abbr> commuters could benefit from future plans for the rail project; COVID-19\u2019s grounding of the state\u2019s top skydiving operations; and an exclusive interview with Deputy Prosecutor Tricia Nakamatsu.<\/li>\n<li>Bronze Telly Award for <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/5MTmGpVrV5Y\"><em><abbr>UHMtv<\/abbr><\/em> show <abbr>No.<\/abbr> 19<\/a>: Produced in spring 2020 by student producers <strong>Ronnie Allen Campman<\/strong>, <strong>Keila Lee<\/strong> and <strong>Chaz Mihara<\/strong>, with student anchors Lee and Campman. Stories included <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s bleak economy and need to support local restaurants during the coronavirus lockdown; the future of <span aria-label=\"Haiku\">Ha&#699;ik\u016b<\/span> Stairs; the opportunity for student athletes to play an additional year; and an exclusive interview with <abbr title=\"American Association of Retired Persons\">AARP<\/abbr> Director <span aria-label=\"Kealii\">Keali&#699;i<\/span> Lopez.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Production during the pandemic<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_142899\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-142899\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/manoa-journalism-telly-awards-spring2020-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people on a zoom screen\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-142899\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/manoa-journalism-telly-awards-spring2020-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/manoa-journalism-telly-awards-spring2020-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/manoa-journalism-telly-awards-spring2020.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-142899\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa spring 2020 Journalism 480 students and their instructors<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;I\u2019m very proud of the work we produced,&rdquo; said Ufi. &ldquo;It\u2019s not your average homework assignment to do what we did. It took sacrifice and determination, and luckily I was surrounded by people who were willing to do it all.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>With no studio or in-person class time to work on their stories, students turned to Zoom to record interviews online and creatively film their stories from remote locations. Using dorm rooms, backyards and home garages to set up makeshift green screens, they worked remotely to connect with team members and complete the series.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;When the semester turned to online learning, we thought we were going to have to cancel our <em><abbr>UHMtv<\/abbr><\/em> show. We went from seeing each other every day to not at all, but&#8212;with some creative thinking&#8212;it all worked out,&rdquo; said Campman. &ldquo;I filmed the entire show in my childhood bedroom. We took out my bed, night stand and dresser to make room for the studio lights, cameras and green screen, and my bedroom became a news studio!&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Since 2019, <abbr>CSS<\/abbr> journalism students have received seven Telly Awards for their <em><abbr>UHMtv<\/abbr><\/em> series.
