  {"id":142546,"date":"2021-05-27T16:21:05","date_gmt":"2021-05-28T02:21:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=142546"},"modified":"2021-06-04T16:55:41","modified_gmt":"2021-06-05T02:55:41","slug":"women-inmates-strive-with-windward-cc-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/05\/27\/women-inmates-strive-with-windward-cc-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Women inmates strive with Windward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> program"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/windward-wccc-sign.jpg\" alt=\"Women&#039;s Community Correctional Center sign\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-142549\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/windward-wccc-sign.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/windward-wccc-sign-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/windward-wccc-sign-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Seven dedicated women at the Women&#8217;s Community Correctional Center (<abbr>WCCC<\/abbr>) were awarded <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.windward.hawaii.edu\/psychology\/psychosocial-developmental-studies\">Psycho-Social Development Academic Subject Certificates<\/a> on May 25, after each completed 27 credit hours of college studies through the <span aria-label=\"Puuhonua\">Pu&#699;uhonua<\/span> program at <a href=\"https:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\/\">Windward Community College<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The rigorous, demanding classes included psychology, sociology, community health worker and introduction to college. The certificate will allow them to pursue careers in counseling, drug treatment, community health services and related fields.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The academic attainment of these seven women represents not just the fulfillment of their dreams through perseverance and hard work, but the amplification of dreams for their children and relatives, and hope for their communities,&rdquo; said Windward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> Chancellor <strong>Ardis Eschenberg<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> offers free college courses for credit to incarcerated women through the <span aria-label=\"Puuhonua\">Pu&#699;uhonua<\/span> program. &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Puuhonua\">Pu&#699;uhonua<\/span>: Places of Sanctuary,&rdquo; is a five-year <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/programs\/iduesannh\/index.html\">U.S. Department of Education Title <abbr title=\"Roman numeral three\">III<\/abbr> Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions<\/a> grant, which ends this year. The project provides credit-bearing college coursework at the <abbr>WCCC<\/abbr>, Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olomanaschoolhi.k12.hi.us\/\">Olomana School<\/a>. Eschenberg serves as project director and wrote the grant with Sylvia Carter, adult education specialist for the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Education.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is nearly halfway to an associate\u2019s degree and is an accomplishment the women can be extremely proud of,&rdquo; said Roger Tansley, acting education supervisor at <abbr>WCCC<\/abbr>. &ldquo;These women showed great &lsquo;stick-to-itiveness&rsquo; throughout the COVID situation and were able to complete the certificate via distance learning and correspondence.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the dedicated instructors, Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> administration, <span aria-label=\"Puuhonua\">Pu&#699;uhonua<\/span> program staff, Warden Eric Tanaka, <abbr>WCCC<\/abbr> education center and staff, the program survived and thrived during the COVID-19 health crisis.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is our hope to expand this program to provide for a greater number of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> incarcerated population, providing qualifications for future employment, recognizing intelligence and resilience, and honoring growth and hard work.
