They are among more than 300 recipients of <a href=\"http:\/\/uhcc.hawaii.edu\/kulia\/\">K\u016blia Scholarships<\/a> since they were first made available through the <a href=\"https:\/\/uhcc.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Community Colleges<\/a> in fall 2020 to support <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> residents whose employment was impacted by COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>A limited number of $500 K\u016blia Scholarships for tuition and fees are now available for fall 2021. <a href=\"https:\/\/uhcc.hawaii.edu\/kulia\/apply.php\">The deadline to apply is August 8, 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To be eligible, K\u016blia Scholarship applicants must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be a resident of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>Have been furloughed or laid off from a job in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> because of COVID-19 impacts (since March 2020) and have documentation. Priority will be given to those who lost full-time employment.<\/li>\n<li>Have graduated from high school prior to 2020.<\/li>\n<li>Be admitted and enrolled as a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Community College student for fall 2021. Priority will be given to those who are pursuing their first degree or industry-recognized certificate. He enrolled in classes at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kauai.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College<\/a> and is now on a path to continue his educational journey with the goal of becoming an elementary school teacher.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;To be able to go back to school and do something, really helped in terms of motivation,&rdquo; Ochoco said. &ldquo;And with the help of the K\u016blia Scholarship, it kind of helped get me back on my feet.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> resident <strong>Lindsey Brown<\/strong> worked in the tourism industry for 10 years, starting at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Island and moving to catering and sales at the Four Seasons Resort <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> at Ko Olina, before losing her job due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Brown, 32, said the K\u016blia Scholarship helped her to turn a negative into a positive. She is currently taking classes at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College<\/a> and is applying to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/academics\/programs-of-study\/radiologic-technology-program\/\">radiologic technology program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It was kind of nerve racking, but having the extra boost of motivation and the extra little bit of help, to pay for the classes and help financially, was also wonderful,&rdquo; Brown said. &ldquo;I think that this scholarship is certainly a great opportunity for people to take what life hands you and turn it around and turn it into something good.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Ochoco added, &ldquo;The K\u016blia Scholarship has been a big help.
