Armstrong on Haleakal\u0101<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The award-winning television show, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xplorationstation.com\/show\/Xploration-Awesome-Planet\"><em>Xploration Awesome Planet<\/em><\/a> will feature University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifa.hawaii.edu\/\">Institute for Astronomy<\/a> (<abbr>IfA<\/abbr>) education and outreach specialist, <strong>J.D. Armstrong<\/strong> and his students on Saturday, May 15, at 2:30 p.m. on <abbr>KHON<\/abbr>. Students are given access to observational data from telescopes on Haleakal&#257;, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/lco.global\/observatory\/sites\/haleakala\/\">Las Cumbres Observatory Faulkes Telescope North<\/a>, Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System and <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr>\u2019s PAN-STARRS, the world&#8217;s leading Near Earth Object (<abbr>NEO<\/abbr>) discovery telescope.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The students I\u2019m working with do some pretty amazing work,&rdquo; explained Armstrong. &ldquo;Take this situation as an example. An object was detected that was going to impact the earth, and I called these guys. It might bother some people to think that the safety of the world might end up in the hands of some teenagers, but it shouldn\u2019t. (Photo credit: Henry Weiland)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Observational data has led <abbr>HI STAR<\/abbr> students to make cutting-edge discoveries including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/08\/04\/students-track-asteroid-2020-oo1\/\">potentially hazardous <abbr>NEO<\/abbr><\/a>. Armstrong\u2019s students Wilson Chau and Holden Suzuki, who are also set to appear on Saturday\u2019s <abbr>TV<\/abbr> episode, netted national headlines in 2020 after they helped scientists determine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/08\/04\/students-track-asteroid-2020-oo1\/\">a 1,070-pound space satellite would explode over the South Pacific<\/a>. 15-year-old Jed Orion Teagarden, who earned top honors for his research on a comet-like asteroid, and co-authored more than a dozen <a href=\"https:\/\/minorplanetcenter.net\/\">Minor Planet Center<\/a> circulars will be featured, as well.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>HI STAR<\/abbr> has mentored more than 100 students in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii.\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½.<\/span> Many have gone on to pursue careers in astronomy and physics.
