Addressing all of these issues through changes to our food system, he said, are essential to fulfilling the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2020\/03\/1059832\">state\u2019s commitments to the <abbr title=\"United Nations\">UN<\/abbr> Sustainable Development Goals<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/planning.hawaii.gov\/sustainability\/hawaii2050\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> 2050 Sustainability Plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The film also relates to a new research, policy and planning initiative, <a href=\"https:\/\/transforminghawaiifoodsystem.org\/\">Transforming <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> Food System Together<\/a> (<abbr>THFST<\/abbr>). This collaborative and multi-sectoral food system change initiative seeks to convene key stakeholders, conduct applied research, articulate policy and planning recommendations, and build statewide capacity to achieve a more economically robust, sustainable, equitable and resilient food system for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. Besides <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/academics\/degrees\/applied-science\/sustainable-community-food-systems\/\">Sustainable Community Food Systems<\/a> program, <abbr>THFST<\/abbr> involves <abbr>UH<\/abbr> faculty and staff from the Office of Indigenous Innovation and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a>, in addition to many community and agency partners.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_141066\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-141066\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/west-oahu-ketchup-and-mms-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"table with fruits and vegetables\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-141066\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/west-oahu-ketchup-and-mms-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/west-oahu-ketchup-and-mms-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/west-oahu-ketchup-and-mms-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-141066\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Courtesy: Green Island Films)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;The documentary tells an important story about the impacts to the food system during COVID-19, identifies key points of vulnerability, and points to the need for statewide food system planning and investment to simultaneously achieve public health, biocultural restoration, economic diversification, sustainability and climate change resilience goals in the face of future crises,&rdquo; Miles said. &ldquo;We believe this is an important story that our community needs to hear to build the popular support for strategic planning and action for meaningful food system change.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interacademies.org\/news\/global-food-systems-are-failing-humanity-and-speeding-climate-change\">2018 global report<\/a> by the InterAcademy Partnership (<abbr>IAP<\/abbr>), comprising 130 national academies of science and medicine across Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe, the current approach to food, nutrition, agriculture and the environment is unsustainable and must fundamentally change. According to the <abbr>IAP<\/abbr> and <a href=\"https:\/\/scalingupnutrition.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/EATLancet-Report.pdf\">other scientific consortia<\/a> (<small><abbr title=\"portable document format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/small>), global food systems are failing humanity and accelerating climate change. Transforming global and regional food systems, and changing dietary patterns, are the key ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ajcn\/article\/113\/1\/7\/6000654\">improving human health and environmental quality<\/a> while advancing climate change adaptation and mitigation.
