Richardson School of Law<\/a>\u2019s new Clinical Building has joined a dozen other structures throughout the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> System in achieving Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (<abbr>LEED<\/abbr>) status, one of the top levels of energy efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>Although the building was dedicated two years ago, the <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> Green Building Council in charge of <abbr>LEED<\/abbr> designations needed time to verify and finalize the building\u2019s status.<\/p>\n<p>Achieving Gold <abbr>LEED<\/abbr> status included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>diversion of 86&#37; of the on-site generated construction waste from the landfill<\/li>\n<li>sourcing 48&#37; of the materials from the region<\/li>\n<li>access to public transportation and bicycle racks<\/li>\n<li>a reflective white roof coating<\/li>\n<li>double-pane tinted windows<\/li>\n<li>low-flow water use features<\/li>\n<li>high quality of indoor air and ventilation<\/li>\n<li>use of non-toxic and low Volatile Organic Compound paints and materials<\/li>\n<li>occupant-controlled lighting and motion sensors<\/li>\n<li>water-efficient landscaping and natural stormwater controls (bioswales)<\/li>\n<li>an overall energy cost savings of 31&#37; from various features including 50 solar photovoltaic panels on the roof that generate about 17&#37; of the building\u2019s power needs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other &ldquo;green&rdquo; features of the building include a specialized skylight two stories overhead that fills the lobby with natural light; native plants landscaping surrounding the building; and sound\u00adproof interview rooms offering privacy to community members served by the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> law school\u2019s increasingly robust clinical program.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Other <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <abbr>LEED<\/abbr> status buildings:\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/06\/20\/palamanui-earns-leed-platinum\/\">P\u0101lamanui earns <abbr>LEED<\/abbr> Platinum status for sustainable campus design<\/a>, June 20, 2017<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2016\/02\/19\/uh-information-technology-center-awarded-leed-gold\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Information Technology Center awarded <abbr>LEED<\/abbr> Gold<\/a>, February 19, 2016<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2012\/01\/26\/cmore-leed-award\/\">Green building earns platinum award for <abbr title=\"Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education\">C-MORE<\/abbr> building<\/a>, January 26, 2012<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Contributing to a sustainable campus<\/h2>\n<p>When the building was dedicated in 2019, former Associate Dean <strong>Denise Antolini<\/strong>, who oversaw much of the decade-long funding, design and construction of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> law school\u2019s third building, spoke of the importance of striving for <abbr>LEED<\/abbr> status to contribute to a sustainable campus.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Looking 30 years ahead&#8212;when this building is here but most of us will not be on this campus&#8212;I hope our succes\u00adsors will say that this project has truly improved the university and our island community,&rdquo; Antolini said.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Despite our very large personal and professional investment in getting this building off the ground, it\u2019s really not about us. It\u2019s about building a sustainable future for our students who will serve others, with professionalism and aloha, here in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and around the world,&rdquo; added Antolini.<\/p>\n<p>Dean <strong>Camille Nelson<\/strong> said she is gratified by <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s dedication to supporting sustainable structures, and is proud of the <abbr>LEED<\/abbr> recognition attained by the Clinical Building. She added her thanks to former Dean <strong>Avi Soifer<\/strong> for his dedication to the project and leadership in the multi-million dollar fundraising effort led by Honolulu attorney Mark Davis.
