Sonny Ganaden presented a congratulatory certificate signed by members of the legislature to Department Chair Ty Tengan on April 26.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitol.hawaii.gov\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Legislature<\/a> recognized the 50th anniversary of the ethnic studies program in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialsciences.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a> at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa. <abbr title=\"Representative\">Rep<\/abbr>. <strong>Sonny Ganaden<\/strong>, a former instructor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/ethnicstudies.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">Department of Ethnic Studies<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/amst\/\">Department of American Studies<\/a>, presented a congratulatory certificate signed by members of the legislature to Department Chair <strong>Ty Tengan<\/strong> on April 26.<\/p>\n<p>Ethnic studies started as a two-year experimental program in the fall of 1970 in the midst of several political movements. More than 125 participants attended the virtual event. Tengan began the celebration with a chant. <abbr>Rep<\/abbr>. <strong>Roy Takumi<\/strong>, a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa alumnus and former <abbr>ES<\/abbr> 330 Japanese in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> teaching assistant delivered remarks; and Tengan read a statement from <abbr title=\"Senator\">Sen<\/abbr>. <strong>Brian Taniguchi<\/strong>, who is also a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa alumnus and former <abbr>ES<\/abbr> 330 Japanese in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> teaching assistant.<\/p>\n<p>Several current and former students congratulated the department through performances and spoke about their achievements in successful initiatives such as, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ethnicstudies.manoa.hawaii.edu\/bam\/\">five-year bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degree pathways in ethnic studies and education<\/a>, service learning, the work with Professor Davianna <span aria-label=\"Pomaikai\">P\u014dmaika&#699;i<\/span> McGregor on <span aria-label=\"Kahoolawe\">Kaho&#699;olawe<\/span> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/ethnicstudies.manoa.hawaii.edu\/center-for-oral-history\/\">Center for Oral History<\/a>\u2019s move into the Department of Ethnic Studies.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Provost <strong>Michael Bruno<\/strong> and College of Social Sciences Dean <strong>Denise Eby Konan<\/strong> also honored the 50th anniversary of the ethnic studies program.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are so proud that ethnic studies has played a significant role at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa,&rdquo; Konan said. &ldquo;The program has helped incoming freshmen adapt to the college experience through its summer bridge program.
