Phytoplankton are microscopic marine algae.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_140027\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-140027\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/manoa-himb-michael-rappe.jpg\" alt=\"man smiling\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-140027\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/manoa-himb-michael-rappe.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/manoa-himb-michael-rappe-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/manoa-himb-michael-rappe-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-140027\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michael Rapp&#233;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Rappephyceae<\/em> is a group of organisms that are among the most abundant phytoplankton in the ocean and appear to be an important contributor to global photosynthesis.<\/p>\n<p>As a graduate student at Oregon State University, Rapp&#233; first discovered this group by sequencing <abbr title=\"deoxyribonucleic acid\">DNA<\/abbr> from seawater collected from the Atlantic Ocean near Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/9435081\/\">published the finding<\/a> in 1998.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, an international team of researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0960982221003511?fbclid=IwAR3EXmbkNyJyY9eKxnrZQxtjaN--V7gRq76_RgDRrsYoosIvKl_Nj0m0-mI#bib14\">successfully isolated<\/a> the first phytoplankton strain belonging to this genetic lineage and determined that this represents a unique class of organisms deserving of a distinct taxonomic label.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Ours were some of the first studies to use <abbr>DNA<\/abbr> sequencing to describe coastal bacterioplankton communities, allowing us to identify natural communities of phytoplankton in a way that wasn\u2019t possible otherwise,&rdquo; said Rapp&#233;. &ldquo;This revealed a particular <abbr>DNA<\/abbr> sequence that was unique&#8212;it did not have any close relatives that had been cultured&#8212;and it was widely distributed in the global ocean.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The novel group of phytoplankton that Rapp&#233; discovered is a type of haptophyte, a category of marine organisms that includes one of the most abundant open ocean phytoplankton called coccolithophores.
