To provide a valuable opportunity for those talented students and spark more interest in journalism education across the state, the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/communications.manoa.hawaii.edu\/journalism-ba\/\">journalism program<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/communications.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Communications<\/a> co-hosted the virtual <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> High School Journalism Awards with the <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaiipublishersassociation.com\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Publishers Association<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.staradvertiser.com\/\">Honolulu Star-Advertiser<\/a> on April 15.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve high school programs submitted entries in several categories including writing, photography, design and online. The first place winner was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hbaeagleeye.com\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Baptist Academy<\/a>, followed by <a href=\"https:\/\/napueo.com\/\">Mid-Pacific Institute<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/mililanitimes.com\/\">Mililani High School<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Democracy cannot exist without journalism.<br \/>&#8212;Brett Oppegaard<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The journalism program team, led by Associate Professor <strong>Brett Oppegaard<\/strong> and Secretary <strong>Brandon Zakahi<\/strong>, managed the behind-the-scenes judging process and led the ceremony process, including creating a new online judging system, recruiting and corresponding with judges, tallying the results and co-emceeing the ceremony with <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Publishers Association President Jay Hartwell. In addition to helping out the high school journalism community, Oppegaard used the opportunity to communicate the importance of journalism for American democracy.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The study of journalism helps everyone, at every level. We need to support it,&rdquo; Oppegaard said. &ldquo;Democracy cannot exist without journalism, and the <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> has a special role for journalists, protected by the First Amendment, and conceptualized as the Fourth Estate. Journalists provide a critical check on the three branches of the American government.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Oppegaard added, &ldquo;Beyond the bigger picture, at the personal level, journalism is a truth-seeking ideology.
