The virtual event, from April 12 to 15, 2021, is being organized in collaboration with partner water centers from <a href=\"https:\/\/weri.uog.edu\/\">Guam<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvi.edu\/research\/water-resources-research-institute\/default.aspx\">Virgin Islands<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/water-resources\/water-resources-research-act-program\">United States Geological Survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_138862\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-138862\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/system-epscor-water-conference-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"rainbow over arboretum\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-138862\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/system-epscor-water-conference-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/system-epscor-water-conference-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/system-epscor-water-conference-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-138862\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Climate station located at Lyon Artoretum.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;This important conference will showcase the work of the entire <span aria-label=\"Ike\">&#699;Ike<\/span> Wai research team and share the major outcomes with colleagues in tropical island environments,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Director of Cyberinfrastructure and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>EPSCoR<\/abbr> Project Director <strong>Gwen Jacobs<\/strong>. &ldquo;This information exchange between scientists is vital to sustaining water resources in island communities.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/\">National Science Foundation<\/a> awarded $20 million to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> to do a five-year, groundbreaking study of water sustainability issues through the collaborative project. <span aria-label=\"Ike\">&#699;Ike<\/span> Wai aims to ensure <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s future water security through an integrated program of research, education, community engagement and decision support. The project collected new hydrological and geophysical data to develop actionable and informative models of two of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s important aquifers, their water flow and transport processes. Conference themes include climate change; watershed management; managing water for ecosystems and people; Indigenous and local knowledge, perspectives and management; leading-edge technological advances in water science and more. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/epscor\/tropical-islands-water-conference-virtual-field-trips\/\">Virtual field trips<\/a> will also be featured.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Unlike previous <abbr>WRRC<\/abbr>-hosted conferences, this one is reaching out to the international community. It serves as the central location for data management, analysis, visualization and dissemination of all data and data products generated by the project. Geophysical, geochemistry, precipitation and marine geophysics data are among the publicly available data sets collected by the <span aria-label=\"Ike\">&#699;Ike<\/span> Wai project.<\/p>\n<p>Data such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/03\/31\/first-images-of-freshwater-plumes-at-sea\/\">marine controlled source electromagnetic imaging of freshwater plumes<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/11\/25\/offshore-freshwater-discovery\/\">submarine aquifer<\/a> off the west coast of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Island, which demonstrated twice as much freshwater is stored offshore than was previously thought, is available to download on the site.<\/p>\n<p>Available data also includes compiled current and historical data sets from government, private and university sources such as water quality, well and rainfall data.
