When many different populations and cultures are lumped together by surveys and the census into the &ldquo;other&rdquo; category, it is impossible to tease out anything of value. <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/hnfas\/\">Department of Human Nutrition, Food, and Animal Sciences<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a>, in collaboration with the <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhcancercenter.org\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Cancer Center<\/a> and Purdue University, are conducting the study &ldquo;Exploring Diet Diversity of Native Hawaiian Infants.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There isn\u2019t enough information about how Native Hawaiian babies are eating and growing,&rdquo; said <strong>Marie Kainoa Fialkowski Revilla<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa associate professor in human nutrition and principal investigator. &ldquo;Through promoting healthy and thriving babies, new mommies and families, we are hopeful that improved outcomes would follow. This study will make a meaningful impact on the Native Hawaiian community.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<h2>Collecting data, photos on app<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_138179\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-138179\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-jabsom-baby-greens.jpg\" alt=\"baby eating greens\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-138179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-jabsom-baby-greens.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-jabsom-baby-greens-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-jabsom-baby-greens-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-138179\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Baby eating greens.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Expectant mothers must be Native Hawaiian, 18 years and over and have a smartphone to download the study\u2019s app. Baby\u2019s vitals are recorded from birth, and mothers complete a survey when their baby is two months old. Then when their baby reaches their 4th, 6th, 9th, and 12th months, mothers will use the app to take photos of their meals and their baby\u2019s meals for three days. No baby pictures and no selfies are required. &ldquo;Anyone with decent Instagram skills can do this,&rdquo; said Revilla. &ldquo;Don\u2019t we all take pictures of our food?&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p><strong>Bliss Kaneshiro<\/strong>, a professor in the <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> <abbr title=\"obstetrics and gynecology\">OB-GYN<\/abbr> Department, is assisting Revilla. Kaneshiro said, &ldquo;I love being a part of Dr. Revilla\u2019s study because it\u2019s so easy for patients to participate. I think parents, children and families will really benefit from the results of this study. Studies done in other parts of the country just don\u2019t apply here in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> because of our racial diversity, which plays a role in the food we eat and the food we provide to our babies.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The National Institutes of Health has funded the project through <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> and <a href=\"http:\/\/ola.jabsom.hawaii.edu\/home\/about\/\">Ola HAWAII<\/a>. Revilla and Kaneshiro are eager to collect the data that can make a difference in daily health and wellness choices made by those in the Native Hawaiian community. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The study is designed to promote healthy thriving babies, new mothers and families.
