Burns School of Medicine\u00a0(right) account for about 95% of the $63 million awarded to\u00a0<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u00a0in the 2020 federal fiscal year.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The State of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> received an economic boost during the COVID-19 pandemic thanks to the world class research at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. Funding from the National Institutes of Health (<abbr>NIH<\/abbr>) directly supported 1,298 jobs and generated $191 million in economic activity, according to a March 24 news release by the federal agency. <abbr>NIH<\/abbr> is the nation\u2019s medical research agency and part of the <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> Department of Health and Human Services.<\/p>\n<p>The<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhcancercenter.org\"> University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Cancer Center<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\">John A. Burns School of Medicine developed a multidisciplinary <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>-based Center of Biomedical Research Excellence in Diabetes Mellitus, which will initially span departmental and eventually campus borders to promote the metabolic health of the people of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the Pacific region.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;When the <span aria-label=\"Kakaako\">Kaka&#699;ako<\/span> campus was first envisioned in the 1990s, the commitment <abbr>UH<\/abbr> made to the state was that our health science research would bring in millions in federal dollars to Hawaii while performing research that improves the lives of our residents and beyond,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Vice President for Research and Innovation <strong>Vassilis Syrmos<\/strong>. &ldquo;We believe <abbr><NIH<\/abbr> is actually underestimating the true economic impact and look forward to a more comprehensive analysis of <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s economic impact to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> currently underway by <abbr>UHERO<\/abbr>, the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Economic Resource Organization.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>More than 80&#37; of <abbr>NIH<\/abbr>\u2019s $41.7 billion annual budget is awarded through competitive grants to researchers in every state, according to the recently-released report <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2NNxMeV\"><abbr>NIH<\/abbr>\u2019s Role in Sustaining the <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> Economy<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedformedicalresearch.org\/\">United for Medical Research<\/a> (<abbr>UMR<\/abbr>).
